Weird black polygons on custom models

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:05 pm

I've got a problem with some of my model turning black when put ingame. I think it has something to do with shadows, but I'm not sure what. The parts that are black seem to change each time it is added to the world. Originally I thought it was because it had a very high poly count, but I lowered it and it is still doing it.

Anyone run into this before and know how to fix it? I figure it is probably a simple NifSkope fix or something, but I'm yet to find it...

Make sure all the mesh faces are facing outward.

Ooops. Thanks. That was the problem. I left that from a model I converted into mine (since I'm lazy). All is well again in the world.

Since you fixed yours, it won't be the same problem here, but I've also had that happen with coincident faces - i.e. two faces in the same place, usually caused by joining overlapping meshes. Blender has a function for finding and deleting those, but I don't remember the arcane incantation right now. After doing the Update Tangent Spaces spell you would see flickering polys that are coincident, but they wouldn't be black, so you could still have those.

My meshes don't have that problem. And I didn't actually Update Tangent Spaces so much as delete them from the NIF. :P I figure what isn't there can't hurt me :P
