Nostalgia goggles... INCREDIBLE!

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:16 pm

I was looking around for clips of old TV shows and such that I use to really love.
I finally recalled the name of one of my favorite shows... AUTOMAN! Another one was Greatest American Hero.

I watched the clip on YouTube and and I could not believe how cheesy it was.
It was still a killer show for the time, but the acting in the era just caught me off guard.

Games and cartoons I loved will always be timeless in my book.

Another cool thing to look up is old video of rides at Disneyland. Like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwen7eEFz3s

I played Prince of Persia 3D a while ago. I really liked that game as a kid. But now I played it again and it's absolutely awful. :P

Also when I play a game that I used to play many years ago I often have the idea that the graphics used to be better.

Obviously they were, and they've simply bitrotted away. I can think of no other explanation :P

Heh, Automan. I used to love the Automan theme and was a big fan of the show when it aired back in 1984 or whenever it was. Now, not so much, compared to other US shows from the 80s like Knight Rider, Remington Steele, Magnum PI, Airwolf, A-team and MacGyver, I would put Automan last. It's bad, but only slightly worse than Knight Rider which is quite awful as well.

That said, one show I loved as a kid and still think is great is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Adventure_Cobra#Anime from 1982. Still a pure bliss to watch, still absolutely awesome ^_^

I have Prince of Persia 3D too. It's one of the first games that used the Netimmerse renderer (later known as Gamebryo). Which is what Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 use, although they obviously used later more modern versions of it.

I've noticed this with some of the older games. When I tried going back to Shogun:Total War after playing later TW games, I was surprised that it felt as if it lacked too many features. I replayed "Omikron" and when my character reached the Temple again, I was disappointed; I remembered the sound design as being better than it really was (they apparently incorporated Buddhist temple bells, chanting, and so on, but it wasn't as impressive as I remembered).

I replayed "Morrowind" after being away for six years and found I don't have the patience to finish the quests anymore, though I may try again sometime. As my first sandbox game, Morrowind in 2005 was a mind-blowing experience.

Not on the xbox it isn't

The cartoons I grew up with were the greatest because I grew up with them! I look at the cartoons kids watch today and think how [censored] they are, then I realize that my parents probably thought the same thing about my cartoons. Though I will say that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0EEBxh7Xrg stands the test of time, mainly because it has the best intro music of all time!

I tried to start playing it again a few months ago. I still think it's awesome, but nowadays I svck too much at the combat to get very far :P

I blame the clunky controls.

I dunno, the old Warner Brothers cartoons sure made my dad laugh. He had a thing for running gags and slapstick. Ittybitty doggy sneaks up on cat...dog yips loudly...cat clings to cieling...made him laugh every time!

Then there's Robinhood Daffy... :toughninja:

I'm not sure how much is better quality in programming or just the difference in how immature we were when we were younger.

I really have no interest in a lot of TV programming because I consider it beneath my intelligence to waste time watching it. That came from getting older and realizing how immature the target audience was.

When you're a kid, it's all good.

I've been playing trough the "Final Doom" megawads again, the only perfect game ever made ^_^ And i'm still as good as i ever was, Plutonia experiment Ultra-Violence, no problem (though i'm cheating with mouse aim ). Maybe i should try tackle the Hell Revealed, Memento Mori and Alien Vendetta "doom gods only" mods too?

And Memento Mori has amazing music, I love those 90's MIDI beats, even though my Sound Blaster doesn't play them quite as good as previous card.

Agreed (and I still like that intor it seems) allthough the cartoons werent the best because I grew upwith them, they were the best because they were just that awesome, Johnny Bravo, Dexters lab, Courage...
Well I now have to look them up on youtube again :D (its creepy becuase I am nearly 18) but still, awesome shows were awesome, and since catroon network or the other channels stopped making cartoons, they will always be the pinnacle ofcartoon awesomeness.

I just bought The Greatest Amercian Hero on DVD. It was season 1. I am not sure if there is season 2 or not. Yes great show. Yes so cheesy, but was fun to watch.

You can get some old series including that one now on YouTube subscription... http://www.youtube.com/user/NewVideoDigital

I think only a few shows from the 80s-90s will be as endearing as say I Love Lucy. That was truly timeless. Or was it?

After i play the sequle i hate playing the game before it, mass effect is a good example, thought id give it a quick run thru, but i couldn't get into it. Playing fallout 3 after nv made me miss the compainon wheel and iron sights.

So i guess i don't own a pair of nostalgia goggles lol

take that back becuase invader zim is still amazing lol, some of that was a little dark for a kids show

There are some recent ones that are good, with complexity, continuity, and character development. Avatar is a well known one, the http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0976192/ (Stan Lee is listed as creator there, BTW), and Kim Possible is good, if you bear in mind that it is intended to be lightweight entertainment (well written and all that, but not dark and serious).

I'm not sure how much is better quality in programming or just the difference in how immature we were when we were younger.

Try Gargoyles. Lots of over-arching plots (especially in the second season), with depth that seems rare even in 'grown up' television, and Weisman loves his Shakespeare. A stand out episode for me was one where a main character gets shot, which leads to parallel storylines and has effects which carry on to the rest of the series. You may have to borrow it from a friend, though, since its hard to find. Ignore all of the third season, except the first episode. It was written at short notice by completely different people.

Gargoyles was great. Lots of great voice actors like Ed Asner and Johnathan Franks.
