How to avoid over-hype

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:15 pm

In my opinion, it's not the marketing team's fault that sometimes we get over-hyped over certain games, like Oblivion or Fable back then. Personally I followed every detail of Oblivion before release as well, taking a break every once a while, but back then I was working in the library so I had a ton of boredom time (sitting at the front desk) looking at this forum. However when the game came out, I never had any disappointment when I played, so I wasn't hyped even though I knew every bit of information released before the game came out, and I made tons of suggestions to the game.

So, now with skyrim sitting in the hype machine, how do we avoid hype and, eventually, unnecessary disappointment? My suggestion is to reduce the effort and time you spend on keeping track of Skyrim info. Do not buy magazines. Do not read every thread in the forum. Do not attempt to be the first to hear new released info (after all, we aren't news reporters). This way, we arent expecting some kind of "return" from the game for all the effort we spent on it. We just keep with the flow, doesn't matter if we watch the new video a week after everyone else has, and keep our attention on daily life.

how do you think?

You are asking people not to get over-hyped about a game that may possibly be the best game of the last 9 years. If not the best game that has come out in the history of gaming from the moment the first game came out ?

Impossible.

I think that that kind of reaction is what he is referring to. xD

This thread is overhyping overhyped people by telling them they are too overhyped.

I am avoiding it just by focusing on ONE thing at a time, lke everything else I hear going on in this forums is magic this or spears that, I know 2 things..
Spears won't be in
and
Werewolves and vampires have still not be confirmed yet BETH is trying out in so many words the werewolf thing again

I am focusing on werewolves and vampires, werewolves more tho but thats it because I know Skyrim will be the best and I Won't stop playing it for many months when I get it

How could you not be over hyped about a game that will most definitely have capes, warewolfs, no fast travel and halberds?

I'm hyped, not overhyped :)

The only way I couldn't get hyped over Skyrim would be:
1) living as an hermet for 9 months in the middle of nowhere in the depths of Asia with no internet connection whatsoever
2) see above

So yeah, your arguments for dehyping are futile :D

 Can't avoid overhype when Previewers and Internal peeps are saying "Mind-blown" and the Crowd lost their jaws etc etc.

this game better not bust in a bad way...if the Devs have been trying to not overhype the game they've done a poor job lol, I remember a nit by Todd saying the who chanting bit at the VGA was totally their Idea (VGA) and not the Companies lol. I even saw his face, I knew he wanted to face palm.

To avoid over hype: GTFO the forums. This is because all the news arrives here eventually, and people go on speculation rampages about what might be in the game (so you may get hyped about stuff that's just a poster's cool idea).

Seriously, though, if you're just hearing "the game is awesome", you'll probably think the game is awesome when you play it. The trouble comes when they promise features that don't deliver.

how do you think?

Take everything for what it is and realize that marketing is all about making you believe something is way better than it is. And also realize the devs are going to talk about features as if they're way more dynamic and awesome than they actually are *cough*Radiant AI*cough*. And accept that TES will get more and more mainstream and appealing for stupid folk with each new installment. If you understand all of this, then you can't possibly be disappointed. Disappointed that the game isn't as good as it could have been? Maybe, but not disappointed with what you're playing, or regret spending money because you already know what to expect.

For Skyrim, there is no such thing as over hype. Simply put, humans can not comprehend the awesomeness that is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim without playing it first. Bethesda can advertise and talk about the latest installment in the award winning series all they want and we will still be blown away by it. :grad:

The game will be whatever it is. Based on the screenshots and all the info I've read so far I'm pretty sure it's going to be amazing.

I don't care if it doesn't have (feature X) from Morrowind or Oblivion or whatever. I see no point in trying to avoid reading new info to avoid my own disappointment. If I end up disappointed in the game, who cares?

I enjoy learning new details about the game because I look forward to playing it.

Lol, that's funny. It's hard to tell that you're being sarcastic except for how ridiculous your statement is. I'll be absolutely shocked if any aspect of this game blows me away. I'll buy it. I'll play it. I'll enjoy it. But it likely won't be anything that wows my socks off like Daggerfall or Morrowind did. TES is getting too generic and shallow to do that anymore.

well I went away for a couple of days and am not sure if i'm out of the loop or not with the information and to be honest I couldn't really care. So I guess my hype is over

however in about six months i'll probably hyped again :P

in short just leave the Bethesda forums and any other forums that gives elder scrolls info for awhile, it works wonders

I just keep my expectations reasonable. A large TES world to explore, a decent story, and decent differentiation between characters I create. That is the bare minimum I require for a good TES game. I know for sure I'll get at least that, so everything else is gravy. Hype = killed. :)

Thats pretty much how I engage with these games too. A nice story and a cool world to explore and i'm happy.

Now after i have thrashed the game to death, then I will then rank it in my list of best TES games so far. With all of them being amazing it is pretty hard.

This game has Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age 2, The Witcher 2 etc to compete with this year. I want this game to succeed well in terms of profit and sales quantity in the marketing standpoint. So definitely I need to expose myself greatly in this game and others also, I'm trying to make people get into this game but not in a forceful manner. Hype in doses is not necessarily a bad thing, but over is a bit much which could result in losing interest to the customer and feeling "meh" in the end. I feel confident many will hold interest within nine months and I do want to see this game decimate other titles and hopefully so. We're a small fraction of customers to which this game appeals to and as such, I feel BGS/Bethesda Softworks have hope and do know what they're doing to gain interest of all. Two key elements hold strong for this game, it is an Elder Scrolls game and the developer is BGS and both fail very few. To be honest and very few know this, I'm glad when Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas have entered a gamer's life and stays true to them due to a memorable and enjoyable game.

Don't forget Batman Arkham City. It's not only competing with RPGs.

I take a little red pill that turns me into a blue skull :shakehead: , which makes me like :icecream: .

However seriously, any true RPG'er is going to be exicited.. as well as all those flying munchkins that are posting here atm.

How I get under hopped, is by going into the NV forum and seeing it deserted by the fans.
Those that dropped out as soon as they no longer got any attention about their in game wish list being read by the devs.

I myself avoid reading too much about said game before its release. That way I am completely blown away when I play the game. Also keeping an open mind can keep you from getting dissapointed.
