Name: Ex Libris - PreWar Book Titles
Version: 2.0
Updated: October 1, 2010

"Ex Libris" - Latin for "from the books"

The hunt for Pre War Books has been enhanced with real-world titles, quotations, a variety of covers, and new places to discover these precious tomes.

  • Randomly identifies Pre-War Books from a list of 200 real-world titles, divided by time periods which can be configured to suit individual tastes.
  • Books can appear in place of burned books and inside thematically appropriate containers such as school desks.
  • The infamous "fake" pre-war books sold by vendors will convert correctly
  • Reading a book displays up to four quotations (Pre-1800 era only...more to come)
  • New inventory item: the "Pip-Bard" which can track nearby books on your compass
  • Lore-friendly details added to Vault 101 intro to explain the existence of the Pip-Bard
  • All features configurable in-game via the Pip-Bard menu

This is a complete overhaul of my previous version, known as PreWar Book Titles and Perks. For now the Perks part has been set aside in favor of creating a stable and versatile base for me to add future optional add-ons. As always, I am open to suggestions for improving this mod.

Credit where credit is due: I didn't make the excellent book covers in this mod; I only made it possible to use them all at once. See the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4318 for info about those artists.

I had a question about the turn-in quest rewards but now I see you addressed that on the download description page. :)

I take it the books are randomized from the list of 200 and can spawn multiple times, correct? Does the Pip-Bard track books acquired in any way?

Neat idea on the vendors exchanging books. Would that interact with the current turn-in quest?

If it's the same as the previous version, then you get a unique book every time until you've exhausted the list and then you start getting random repeats.

Showler has it mainly correct: the books are pulled randomly from the list but only if they have not been discovered before, so you should always get a unique book. I didn't want there to be an infinite supply, so I currently have it set so that duplicate books will not spawn if all 200 have been found. (Or whatever the total if you're playing with fewer time periods.)

I am working on a variant inspired by a conversation with the Book Restoration mod author which would make the books you find only partially intact. To complete the book, you would need to find another copy or salvage pages from the Restoration mod. If I go this route, then I would arrange for books to spawn multiple times.

Internally, yes. In a way that the player can see, not so much. The mod knows the difference between a book that has not been found, a book that is found but not yet picked up, and books picked up by the player. Since I am using quests and objectives to track the book status, I was hoping to leave the grayed-out titles displayed after you have picked up books, so you always have a record of what you have found. There are some minor complications with that, though, so for now the quest screen only tracks books that have been loaded into the world but not yet picked up. If I understand you question, are you wanting there to be a way to know for sure when you've exhausted a list?

Haven't decided yet. What would you prefer? Personally, I get bored with the existing turn-in quest after a while, so I'm looking for other things to do with books, but I will always support that quest. Any books that I introduce into the game will be able to be turned-in.

I am imagining more of a checklist somewhere that shows what titles you have found, possibly show which you are missing too. With the partial book ideas, it could show percent complete.

My preference would be to make the existing quest the foundation. One start with a few branches makes for a tidier concept. Perhaps after so many books found, a Brotherhood library opens up (doesn't have to be in mutant territory). Quests could be added to search for particular rare books or some such. After a different turn-in threshold or maybe a quest, merchants start the book exchange, which would ultimately help with library stocking/building goals.

OK, I know that's pushing the scope rather a lot, but if you did run with anything like that it would be cool. :)
