Some help needed with Weather tweaking

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:44 am

I'm relatively new to all this modding business, so please have patience. What I'm trying to do is to tweak Fellout to my own liking which means restoring vanilla nights and keeping the days as is.

So, I've opened Fellout.esp with FO3edit and looked for the Weather info. FO3edit has a clump of data for each Weather item listed under 'NAM0-Colors by Type/Times'. What I've been doing is going over to the GECK, loading up a copy of Fellout.esp as the active file, finding the weather items, and changing the 'Night' settings for Ambient, Sky-Upper, Sky-Lower, Horizon etc.

I haven't tested it out yet, but I'm guessing this will do the job. What say you?

The specific reason I'm posting here though, is this:
Under FO3edit, under each weather item's NAM0 section, there are two cloud entries, one of which is called 'Clouds-Lower' and the other is 'Clouds-Upper'.
In the GECK however, there are two differently named cloud entries, one of which is called 'Cloud Layer' and the other is 'Clouds (not used)'.
The Fellout values I'm tweaking seem to suggest that 'Clouds-Upper' from FO3edit correspond to 'Clouds (not used)' from the GECK.

Does anybody know what is going on here? Is FO3edit missing a set of variables, or vice versa for the GECK?

Thanks beforehand guys.

Yes, that should do it. Just be sure to do that for all the night settings that Fellout has changed.

You're missing something. If you look at the cloud layer graphic itself, you'll see a box that says Layer, with a pull down menu option beside it. That's how you access the various cloud layers, and that's what's showing up in FO3Edit. The Clouds(unused) option is just that, unused, and doesn't register anywhere in FO3Edit. If you're adjusting cloud layer values, you'll need to change that pull down menu for each layer and make your edits that way. I don't believe any default weather type is using more than three layers, though there are 4 available. 2 layers are strictly for the clouds that appear over the horizon, while one is for the upper layer of clouds and the other is for the clouds that appear closer to the ground.

Thanks Belanos, I see the cloud layer values and the 0-3 thingy. I've edited the whole of the original fellout.esp night values using 0 as cloud upper in FO3edit and 3 as cloud lower. However, when testing out the game, this made the sky a really bright blue at night, which can't be right.

Also, I had a suspicion this wasn't right. FO3edit showed that fellout didn't change some of the cloud values at all, but when I went into the GECK, the cloud layer levels were different from what FO3edit said they should be. There's something else we're both missing now.

Does that make sense? Ugh, not really...

The problem with FO3Edit is that it doesn't show the values for all cloud layers - it's missing layers 1 and 2 (the horizon cloud layers).

Really, you're better off making your edits in the Geck, so you can actually see the changes your making. And, if all you want is to return to vanilla-like light levels at night, then you only need to make changes to Ambient and Sunlight.

There's a good set of tutorials on editing weather here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6550 (Files > Miscellaneous > TheOutbreaks WMS Weather Tutorial)

Yes, don't use FO3Edit as your primary modding tool. It was meant to be a supplement, not a replacement.

Yeah, i'm just using FO3edit to quickly check what a mod has changed, and geck for everything else. Anything more complex is too much for me right now.

Got something working now, just kept the Fellout cloud settings. Works nicely. Will check out that manual when I get more time, but given FO:NV is coming out soon.....
