Light Sources - Additional Features

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:22 am

Branching off from http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1163659-light-sources/, the ideas presented in this poll seem like they would really help to increase immersion and gameplay simultaneously. Furthermore, it doesn't seem like they'd be too time consuming or difficult to implement, even at this stage of development given what features we've already heard will be included such as dual wielding and flammable oil (I'm pretty sure I remember hearing/reading this from an official source, but I can't quite remember where - if anybody has a link about flammable oil please post it).

Note that "light sources" here means torches, at the very least. If Skyrim includes other types of light sources such as candles and lanterns, then this poll applies to them as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing what this new engine can do. I hope lighting gets a lot of attention, and a lot of these ideas here are good ones. I do however have a question. If one had perks for say a mace, would those perks translate to a torch as well?

I think that the problem with lighting in oblivion was all around. didn't they have to cut HDR during process? The whole engine was faulted and bad, which really cut options. I think that while we still need to see what this new system can do, I want to believe that with the advances in technology for this past 6 years we can say that these lighting issues have been dealt with.

If the lighting issues are solved, then its just a matter of a day to add candles/lanterns/etc, just make a model, skin it, and put a light reaching more/less than a torch, and with a different colour.

I don't think that it will be difficult at all to implement this if the new engine has fixed the old issues.

It's like adding different colours for a video game car ( forza ) all you really need is the ground work, but it adds a lot of extra customization to a car. In Skyrim I can see different people using different ways of lighting dungeons, be it with lanterns, candles, torches, magic... you get the point.

It'd be nice to have weapons enchanted with a Light effect that make them actually glow and illuminate the area. Why is it that only living entities can be affected by Light spells? :P

I'm not sure what to do for it, butI think if there are dark dungeons, there needs to be some alternative for 2-hand users who don't have the spare handspace for a spell or torch.

I like all the ideas and especially the one about putting out light sources, that would be great for stealth.
