3D Support for Skyrim

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:23 pm

I wish microsoft would put the drivers for 3D into their directX package. I hate how nvidia is the '3D' video card manufacturer. Between that and their physics not working on ATI cards I don't want to support Nvidia anymore!

That said, I watched avatar at Imax in 3D (first 3D movie ever) and was very impressed. I have absolutely no desire to bring that into my home though. I am also waiting for actual 3DTVs. If it is as easy as you say to include 3D then why not. You paid for your hardware and you should get to use it!

I still think 3D is a gimmick but I see the potential and that is the direction the industry is taking.

I say go for it.

In the hub update interview Todd said he wasn't a big fan of 3D gaming and 3D movies so I thinking it is out.

Exactly. Sorry to break it to you 3D fans, but I'm pretty sure it isn't going to happen.

Do I want to play videogames in a way that is very much more headache inducing? No. But if the game allows me to choose between playing in 3D or not, then I won't mind.

... People, take note, the 3Dvision tech for games DOES NOT mean regular non-3D is not supported...
... Most, if not all, of the work to support it comes from nVidia, NOT the games developer. If the developer wanted to keep 3D in mind whilst making the engine, then it would need slightly different code, not many many more man hours...

So... you don't want to support Nvidia because ATI decided not to put 3d support in their drivers? And because ATI decided not to buy up the PhysX physics engine?

Nvidia are the '3D' video card manufacturer because they've been supporting 3D in their drivers for something like 10 years. ATI didn't think there was a market in that, and until now they were right. They might decide to play catch up, they might not. But that's ATI's decision, and not Nvidia's fault.

If Bethesda agree with my crystal ball prediction of 3d being out of the box in the next generation of consoles, and if 3d ready info is as simple to include as it would seem, they'd be foolish not to have the Skyrim engine 3d ready from day 1, despite Todd Howard's apparent dislike for 3d.

Specifically, if they plan to use a modded version of the same engine for many years, like with Morrowind-Oblivion-Fallout 3-Fallout New Vegas, then they'd want to be able to make it 3d ready so if we do get to a point where all AAA titles are expected to be 3d ready, they wouldn't have to do a lot of extra work deep into the depths of the code to get it working perfectly.

The Envy 17 3D seems to get decent reviews despite having an AMD card (Mobility Radeon 5850). I was considering it, but went with the Envy 15 instead because it's thinner and lighter.

Right now I am playing Batman: Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Arcania with 3D Vision and it rocks!!!! I really hope that Sykrim will be "ready for 3D Vision"!

I really really hope that this game supports 3D. I know a lot of people are down on it, but it can be very immersive. Especially in a game like Skyrim. Imagine the depth the image would have, walking through the Forrest with all the trees, snow falling seemingly into your living room, mountains that actually look like they are miles upon miles away.

I think it would be a great addition, and will actually be a little disappointed if it is not added in. Contrary to some peoples opinions, it would not take much to get it 3D compatible, and it certainly wouldn't take away from other parts of the game. Why not include the option for those who would want it.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't 3D require the image to be drawn twice, meaning they'd have to reduce the graphics to keep the FPS decent in 3D ?

( I'm thinking about the consoles first and foremost - not an upward scaleable PC )

Edit: I guess it's the TV's drawing the 3D on consoles, so never mind

your first guess is right! it cuts frames approximately in half so you need to reduce other visuals to keep the frames at the same level...
this is not so much of a problem on a above than average pc, but can be a problem for consoles...
