Okay so yeah I installed Fallout in program files not knowin

Does this mean I have to reinstall it, and delete everything? I guess I can use console commands to get my stuff/level back though it will be tedious. Long story short I wanted the pipboy nightvision mod so having a cyborg character would simply feel more in character. Simple enough right? Just a tiny little cosmetic mod can't be that complicated. So it must be my nubbishness to using mods. I then read that installing Fallout in Program Files causes all kinds of problems with mods. It also doesn't seem to remember my screenshots though everything else works fine is that why?

^ An example of everything screwing up for me in 5 screenshots. Anyways I just want the bad news to be clarified. Do I have to delete everything from scratch, and use the console to get everything back? Was it installing it in program files or was it nubishness to using 7zip? I've watched the youtube videos and 7zip/winrar seem to be the only things I can't make work. Which of course means no working mods.

For your information ... uninstalling Fallout 3 is not the same as deleting all your save games ;) To be sure your save games are not deleted, you can make a backup - they should be stored at My Documents\My Games\Fallout 3\saves.

I ended up moving it to Computer Local disc C Users Public Games. My screenshots are actually working now, and the add on is working as well with Fallout Mod Manager installed. Now I just need to figure out how to get the Geck thing started so I can actually use some mods. In the past I've used TES construction sets so once I get it working it shouldn't take me long to figure basic things out. Anyways thanks for telling me, really glad I didn't lose my saves.

Last time I installed the GECK I had to manually change the install directory. For some odd reason the installer insisted on installing it in program files.

The defult locations is the program files folder. In the case of the GECK, Bethesda didnt have it search the registry to find where Fallout was installed. Thankfully though as Fallout isnt listed in my registry, and installers that insist on searching and they cant find, it is impossible to install.

So then what do you do?

Reading this I'm wondering about my issues with the Oblivion CS. I cannot ever get it to run with OBSE -it does fin on its own but not if I load it with the extender.

I'm wondering if how it is installed that this is the issue. But it works normally just not with OBSE ... so is it possible that it is a registry issue.

I've never heard of this.... what problems does it cause?

I have FO3 installed in Program Files and have never had major issues.... although I do crash more and get a black screen when I exit - but assumed this was an issue with running so many mods....

What has been documented as the issues ? I'd be thankful if someone would link or share....

Thanks.

I am not sure, however I do know that when I reinstalled Fallout to Computer->Local disc C->Users->Games that my mods all of a sudden started working. Well that, and Fallout Mod Manager. For some reason without the FOM the mods do not stay on when you click launch game. My theory is that if you have Fallout itself installed in Program Files that using any mod even the most simple one in the world (like simple as making the hunting rifle do more damage or changing an NPCs hair) won't work. Well it's maybe possible to make mods work that way, but if it so it's probably so ridiculously frustrating that the effort wouldn't be worth it.

It is an issue with regard to the internal security called UAC (User Account Control) with vista and Win7 operating system.

Since many people turn it off rather than learn how to manage it they don't get the issue. it has to do with needing elevated privileges to write to the game directory - with some that includes having to run as admin for others it had to do with extra programs like edit or bash not working right as described here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes4Mod:Wrye_Bash/Installation

What problems were you having with your mods? I'm having an issue with the .esp files not showing up in the data folder. I've had the issue with geck created files or downloaded mods. Is that what you had?
