Is "Fraps" trustable and does it work ?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:58 pm

so I recorded this with my camera and the angle is rather horrible

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v2DDEc7E7I

and then i remembered a few years ago I got a PC gamer magaine for x-mas and it had a small segment on fraps but it said to defrag your computer before useing it or something like that so is it trustable ?

do i need to defrag my computer and if so hows that done / how long does it take ???

will fraps do a better job at recording than what my cam did ??

Works perfectly for me, never required anything special to make it work. The free version only allows recording 30s clips though, so for longer recordings you pretty much neeed to buy the full version.

FRAPS is trustable and it works but it is not free unless you use the stupid free version which only allows 30 sec videos. Just download and use Xfire it is much better.

Of course it'll look better than your camera, [censored] anything looks better than a screen recorded with a camera. And yes, it's safe, assuming you don't try and download it from some crappy website on page 3 of the google results again.

Fraps does work and is trustable. I've used Fraps for about 2 years now.

I've never used FRAPS for anything beyond screenshots (which it does very well, IMHO) and the occasional benchmark, but yes--it works. Been using it for 4+ years running now. And it's perfectly trustworthy, but do yourself a favor and download it http://www.fraps.com/.

Its kind of a messenger for pc games. It allows you send messages to friends on MSN or Xfire through text or you can talk to friend with voice chat who is playing another game. It allows screenshots, videos, and you can make live streams of gameplay footage. In all cases this program is better than FRAPS. Yes it is free.

I've been using the paid version for 6+ years now and I like it. No water marks, no time limits.

I had issues with Xfire (way back when) and frankly don't need any of it's other features so Fraps it was.

There is also http://www.wegame.com/download/. Though again, I had trouble with that to. (Back when it first came out though, so not surprising.)

Same.

Never had any trouble with Fraps, but don't go paying for software until you've tried the freeware version or alternatives.

Well, there technically is a "time limit", the amount of HD space you have. :P Don't expect to be recording much if you only have like 10 gigs available.
Uncompressed video takes a lot of HD space.

Defragging the computer is a performance thing, not a security thing. It's presumably recommended because running fraps to record something has to be done at the same time as whatever you want to record, which of course is going to increase the strain on the computer.

Indeed. It's not necessary by any means but a good defrag (excluding SSDs!!!!) once in awhile can help gain a bit of speed back.

Think of it like a libraries card system. When it's organized (Not fragmented in PC terms.) it's quick and easy to find what you want. Now dump it all out on the floor (Fragmented in PC terms.) and see how long it takes to find what you want.

Same poop, different pile.

Edit: spelling

Fraps is very trust-able and I use the unregistered version when I need to record some stuff in game. It's a bit of a resource hog, but it does what it does quite well. If you get Fraps I highly recommend getting VirtualDub and the xvid plugin to help compress the movies down since they can be quite LARGE. Just make sure your video drivers are up to date for your graphics card.

I have the full version, and it has worked fine for a few years now. (Though monitoring the desktop using Aero/Fraps stopped working for some reason)

Overall I use it pretty often when I play games. Though the file sizes for videos are very high. A 4-5 minute 1920x1080 video could be upwards of 12GB.

I'd rather use a capture card, but the paid version of Fraps is good enough, I haven't heard that many complaints really, but it doesn't always work well with windowed mode if that's a concern.
Oh and for future reference, recording a screen with a camera will always look terrible, no matter what. If it's recorded that way I will not watch it, no matter what the content is, quality is important.

Been using the free version of Fraps for years, even with a 30 seconds time limit, you can do much, unless you want to record your gaming until something noteworthy happens. I used Fraps for my Oblivion video (link in signature) and little editing.

It's very simple to use and set up.
