For my English term 1 Assignment I need to write a persuasive essay on a subject of my choice but I can't think of a topic to write on...
So far my only thought on a subject are Australia becoming a republic

If you suggest a subject could you list pros/cons

Abolishing DRM

pros: Those who buy a product are free to use it unhindered. Allows for a second-hand market of software and media. Guarantees the consumer the ability to use what they purchase.

cons: Potential risks of greater copyright violation

Keeping the Internet Neutral

pros: allows for information and knowledge to be shared freely, benefiting all mankind

cons: ISPs must keep up with the demand for more bandwidth, since they can't tier websites.

Undoing Censorship

pros: Allows for information and ideas to be shared freely, even when society does not look favorably on something right now, they may change their mind in the future (can point to countless examples of this in the past)

cons: Confronts society's taboos and undermines its social norms.

Outlawing Vendor Lock-in

pros: Keeps the consumer from being stuck in somewhere by guaranteeing they have options

cons: hard to implement and enforce, potential risks of good ideas not reaching the black.

I'm not sure if capital punishment is an issue in Australia, but it's one I tend to enjoy writing about since I took an ethics class.

Another good one is religion. It's something I personally enjoy learning about and talking about.

The elderly driving seems to be popping up in my area, also not sure if it's relevant in Australia.

LGBT/bdsn can lead to very interesting debates in every country.

Politics, of course, but I'm not sure how interested one would be in politics in grade nine.

Cloning is another good one that seems to pull emotions out of people.

Alternate energy, specifically nuclear energy could be interesting considering the recent disaster in Japan and the heavy scare that seemed to come with it.

One surprisingly good debate I got into recently was about the validity of diagrams in most mathematics. One that could branch from this is the necessity of advanced mathematics in normal schooling. For instance - As a chef, I can't see myself ever using the trigonometry I was taught so should I have spent the time learning it? (Strictly for practical reasons.)

Ooo persuasive essays :). Just note that most persuasive essays contain more info than persuasion and you want more persuasion than info. Your not writing an informative essay. Think about topics that you feel strongly about. I have strong positions on certain subjects like video games, capital punishment and other things but I may not in others. For me, it's easier to write on those subjects than others. Think about what interests you. Also, don't forget your concession.

Discussions about electric vehicles, abortion, stem cell research, government transparency, cloning, video games, wars, oil, capital punishment, gay rights, and religion in schools are all great topics.
