Body textures for Dark Elves and the Beast Races

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:53 am

I've been working on an armor mod and noticed that when I test the armor out the body textures do not appear flesh colored butare pink like the game doesn't know where to get the texture. All the other races (Nord, Imperial, Breton, Wood Elf & High Elf) are just fine. What do I need to do to correct this. I use the stock meshes/textures from where I unpacked them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Are you sure they're matching for the other races, or might you be getting a fixed texture for all races? If the material isn't "Skin", then it doesn't get matched at all.

Hmm, I'll have to check when I get home. I have checked the armor pieces with the other races I mentioned and the skin textures show as skin, but I will take a look at the materials tree. Wouldn't I import the same mesh (femaleupperbody/femalelowerbody and upperbody and lowerbody for the male) for the body meshes? I'm kinda confused and I'm sure I'm not making much sense. Wouldn't blender export as skin?

Thanks ghastley I'll report back what I find.

Blender tends to add a ".01", ".02" etc. to the end of material and object names. A material like "skin.01" will not be recognized as skin. Neither will it work when the name of the NiTriShapes/Strips is something like "foot.01" or "upperbody.01" after export. Those names are what the engine uses to determine which race texture slot to use for material "skin". "foot", "hand", "upperbody"/"arms" and "lowerbody" are "keywords" for the engine, and only a ":" can terminate them and enable adding of additional text at their ends without disabling them being recognized by the engine.

Mystery solved. I went home and started comparing textures in NifScope, stock ones that have no problem, and mine. Everything looked basically identical so then I started looking at the meshes in my character/_male data files and their file paths for the textures. Instead of saying femaleupperbody or femalelowerbody for the texture what was listed was femalefoot or something like that. I have a body replacer mod installed and they instructed to overwrite files. To make a long story short I copied the stock meshes and disabled the dark elf/kajiit etc from the texture folder and all of a sudden the characters were rendering right. So my next question is, is there a way to open a second Oblivion that is the vanilla one for testing mods. Even though I had disabled all other mods but Oblivion the files were still jumbled from all the mods I had installed. Thanks for all the help I do appreciate it and I have great admiration for all you experienced modders out there, you make it look so easy!
Thanks again
