New to Fallout 3 - question about mods

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:30 pm

HI all,

Im new to fallout 3 , just started playing it a few days ago , so only low level at the mo.

Ivve since discovered all the amazing mods that are available and its got me wondering wether I should start over again with a modded version rather than the vanilla.

The verion I have is the goty with all the dlc's installed via the second disk (they are already in the data folder)

Do you think it would be a mistake to install the FWE before Ive played through the game in vanilla? , or do you think it would be better to maybe just install a few of the 'cosmetic' mods ?

Thanks in advance

Well, you wouldn't have to necessarily "start over" since you're a low level at the moment, you can just add the mods and go from there I think. Take a look at which mods interest you and go from there. Since you're playing FO:3 and not FONV, make sure you get mods for FO:3 and not FONV.

That's heading down the slippery slope my friend. Next thing you know you'll be starting a new game every time something new and shiny comes along and you'll never get to finish the game.

You should probably play through as is for awhile until you get an idea of what it is about the game that you'd like to have changed. Overhauls like FWE are generally meant for players who have already completed the game and are looking for something different in order to keep the experience fresh. For now I'd recommend sticking to the mods that don't affect gameplay, until you run across something that you think is really dumb and want to have changed.

I'm getting FO3 GOTY soon and, as a long time Oblivion mod user, have been wondering about FO3 mods.

Obviously overhauls etc aren't required, I really want to enjoy the game 'as is' for a while, but there must be some essential mods out there that you'd reccommend.

I've already got the unofficial patch, stutter remover, and DarnUIF3, ready to install. You know, the obvious..

I highly suggest that you continue to play and make a list of all the changes you would like to see for your next play threw. You will have a better idea of what to look for when you start searching for mods.

Please, PLEASE, remember to read the readme's when you start to sort threw the mods you want to use. You will run into all sorts of issues if you don't, and 9 times out of 10, any questions you have, will be answered in them :)

One small and commonly overlooked mod you should get is More Hotkeys. Unlike Oblivion, there aren't many mods out there that deal with extra hotkeys, and the default 8 just aren't quite enough IMO. You'll need FOSE for it

I would definitely play through the vanilla game once before adding huge, game-changing mods like FWE. Vanilla FO3 is a great game and there's plenty to do without mods. After that, you'll have a better grip on what you want to change.

Of course  hotkeys, Thanks for the remind. Another's just been released for Oblivion, spoilt for choice there.
Just noticed a hotkeys in alpha post, might be worth a look.

Not got the game yet, and now being threatened with it being a christmas prezzy, so no FO3 till the 25th :shocking:

I've just been trying that one but there's a bug that needs to be worked out. It tends to crash your game sometimes if you try and open up your Inventory screen. It seems I'm turning out to be his beta-tester. I just downloaded a new version though that might fix the problem. If he can work it out, it will make More Hotkeys obsolete, it's a much better mod. Other than having a game crashing bug at the moment. As for Oblivion, there's no real choice there really. Expanded Hotkeys by The Nice One is by far the best. All of his mods are top-notch for that matter.

PS: It looks like the new version solved the problem, I didn't have my game crash after a short test like I would have before. I haven't done a long term test yet but it's looking good so far. It's a great mod, just what this game needed. While More Hotkeys was very useful, it had limitations. This one is much more versatile. You can bind any item now instead of just weapons and armour and do it all from your Pipboy like the default keys. Plus there's an extra modifier you can use. You can also use combinations of the modifiers for even more keys if you need them. That's something like 7 banks available now for a total of 56 keys, including the default ones. I might actually start using some of those meds now.

Oops, I spoke too soon. It has another problem, and a pretty serious one. It's not ready for prime time yet I'm afraid.

It took a while for Ob to get a decent hotkeys mod, then several came along at once. I'm still on Skyranger's, but will probably switch to TheNiceOne's once some additional features are added. Someone needs to buy TheNiceOne FO3 for Xmas and get him modding it too, very talented

Lol, so thats two of us hosting your http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30871 mods. Part of the reason I found playing at higher levels frustrating was all the stuff your Character acquires, but CLEP alows you to store it all AND keep track of it. A must have inho x

I agree. I don't believe there's a mod of his that I'm not using, everything he does is very useful and well constructed. He would do wonders for this game. Though he might find himself limited with FOSE, it's not as advanced as OBSE.

Play it vanilla as long as you can, like 10+ hours. Beat the main story, as many side quests as you can find, explore some places. Then mod it heavily and start over! The game is like a whole new game when modded properly, so play both and experience twice the fallouty goodness!
