Can you even pronounce this?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:47 am

The longest place-name still in use is Taumatawhakatan- gihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokai- whenuakitanatahu, a New Zealand hill.

Found this on my "useless facts", I can't even pronounce it. Can any of our New Zealand friends pronounce this? Do you know where the meaning comes from?

I'm sure if it's name was "The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one." I could pronounce it just fine. :D

Taumatawhakatan- gihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokai- whenuakitanatahu

Let′s see, gonna break this down a little.

Tauma taw haka tan - gi hanga ko au au ota matea turi puka kapiki ma unga horo nuku pokai - when u a kita na ta hu

runs more smoothly off the toung if you try to break it apart a little, probably end up pronouncing this wrong but at least I can say it :P

Went to the link that Venno gave (ah Alizee is back.   ) and to see the sign that had the name on it, at first I thought it was a guard rail for cars LOL.

If you break it down, again, it's easier. Tons of places in NZ have Maori names and even the ones with English games have secondary Maori names that no one uses. Everyone there pronounces them well.

Except for Paraparaumu. Not even newscasters can get it right. It took me a while to get Taumarunui, so I called it T-town.

One big mistake people will make on that word is using the English dipthong for "wh" when it's pronounced as an F sound.

I wonder how conversations about that place go. Like, how far into the name does someone go before the other person is like "Ok, I know where you're talking about. Stop talking."

That has a strangely large succession of vowels in it. It's almost like it was named after the British came, and some Maori were having a laugh- Seeing if they could come up with a horrendously complicated name for a place, laughing at the people trying to pronounce it, then forcing the missionaries to spell it.

Tau ma ta fa ka ta ngi ha nga ko au au ota ma tea tu ri pu ka ka pi ki mau nga ho ro nu ku po kai fe nua ki ta na ta hu.

Fairly simple. Wh is pronounced as an F, and nga is a soft sound, not En Ga.

I can manage saying it okay, but I would never be able to remember it. I would say that you would only have to spend a day or two over here to be able to pick it up, although my parents still haven't quite got it yet
