Is it possible to port over a character's face from NV to Fa

I'm really liking the character save I found on New Vegas Nexus and I was wondering if it's possible to port it over into Fallout 3, considering you can do Fallout 3 ---> New Vegas.

Is this a simple process to do or does it require an elaborate process of steps in GECK?

You don't need to use the GECK to do it. Really you just need http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4094 and the NV savefile.
Run the program, the Input File is the NV savegame, the output file is your FO3 savegame. Click Transfer and it's done. It helps if the two are the same race and gender.

Even though it was the other direction, using the NV version I got my FO3 main characters to copy over onto an NV save perfectly. Sometimes it may not work perfectly, though, but as long as the two are the same race it'll help.

Awesome, looks good.

One question though, just to clarify. Since I need a output file, can I just create a 'dummy' save file in Fallout 3 with the same race/gender to transfer it over?

Yes. Just a randomly generated face will do, with a name.

Although occasionally I've found that if you use an Alternate Start mod and haven't chosen a history, or SPECIALs or two skills it might not transfer, it may pop up an error. If it does just pick them at random and change them before leaving.

That seems to have worked but I can't change the hair using showracemenu. Not even the default hairs work.

Considering the games use the same engine, is it possible to add hair files for a New Vegas hair pack into the Fallout 3 folder and expect them to work? Or will they not show up at all due to the lack of a .esp? I can't find a Fallout 3 version of the hair pack I downloaded for New Vegas. It's Rikai's Beauty Pack, specifically.

Edit: I managed to get my hair to change in showracemenu. I guess it doesn't work until you turn 19 and have to escape.

Still wondering if porting over the hair pack to Fallout 3 is possible to do, easily.

*scrubs out words. I'm not in the NV forum*

I thought all the hairstyles in NV were from FO3. Unless there are vanilla ones that aren't in FO3? I didn't even notice.
About bringing hairs from NV over to FO3 I don't really know. I've gone the other way but I only got one of the Saram hairstyles to work nicely, the rest didn't look right. Too much clipping as if the style itself was too small for the head.

Edit: I managed to get my hair to change in showracemenu. I guess it doesn't work until you turn 19 and have to escape.

I understand now, now that I remember which forum I'm in  Yes, custom hairs, new hairstyles only take effect when you're 19 and about to leave the Vault. An advlt, I guess. I haven't played a child character, (though did skip the GOAT, escape the vault and play as a 16 year old for a while) so just assumed that all the modded hairs are only fitted for the advlt human head.

Some console commands for you :)
When changing only hairstyle and color use showbarbermenu. To change your facial features and eye color use showplasticsurgeonmenu. To change your name use shownamemenu. You should really only use showracemenu to change your gender and race as it has been rumoured to screw with your character skills and other stats. Not good for an established character with many hours already played.

Also, when doing a character overhaul (even starting a new game) pick your eye color first, as the game can sometimes crash if you do the hair before the eyes. It happens to me, I've read it happening to a couple of others. It seems to only be with modded hairs. Hair packs.

I did some digging around and found the hair for Fallout 3. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'll keep those console commands in mind. I really appreciate your help, thanks a lot.
