Cannot make a single mod work

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:30 am

Hi People.

Can someone help me with installing and finding good mods for Fallout 3?
I downloaded a crapload of mods for it from fallout 3 nexus. But when I extracted the files, the game would not work.

I have all the expansions for Fallout 3. So basically I played FO3 about 2 years ago, but without any expansions or mods. And I am like 30 minutes into the game, and some things need to be changed.

-I have seen people have mods for weapons, it makes all their guns and blunt objects look cooler, more realistic and such.
-I would like to have a companion or something to help me, and to help me carry stuff
- I would like to improve textures, of buildings, terrains...
- More realistic combat
- Some stuff for Factions, I saw some mods that make it easier to join factions, or it makes more factions.
- I would like some mod to change how the pip-boy looks. it is ugly as hell.
-I would like to have safe houses. I don't know if its possible to have a few of them, or just one?
- something else that you could recommend to just improve my game experience.

I am running 1.7.0.3 Version of Fallout 3.

Can anyone assist me? Thank you

Well that's the first thing you're doing wrong. If you're new to mods, don't toss in a bunch at once. Try one or two to make sure you're doing things right and that they're actually working, then take it from there. Since you don't mention how your installing your mods, it's pretty much impossible to give you any advice in how to make them work. If you were to describe how you're going about it, then people would be able to steer you in the right direction. In the meantime you should read the sticky at the top of this forum, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/972878-fallout-3-mods-faq/. It will probably give you all the information you need to get your mods working.

I apologize. I'm new to this forum. I used the FOMM Packet Manager to install the mods. I read the readme files.
As I have never installed mods for Fallout3, I didn't know I was supposed to explain how I had tried it.

Well first of all, that only works with mods that have the .fomod extension. Are you extracting the files you're downloading first, since those are usually in a .zip or .7z format?

yes sir, I had extracted them. I don't see anything that says .fomod, but all of them said they had been activated.

Man, that is a real mess, you should be extracting them into their own folders. And are you putting all those files into your game's Data folder? There's nothing there I can see that you can use the Packet Manager for, you're going to have to copy them over manually. And make sure that everything goes into the correct folders. Textures go into the Data/Textures folder, Meshes into the Data/Meshes one etc.

O dear. You need to place all those files into the data folder instead. (Let me explain 'all those files') put all the .esp/.esm files and the sound, textures, and meshes folder into your data folder. Then they should work better. Also try not to extract them there since the folder will clutter your game.

I did that. I was just showing you what the files looked like.
I put all the files into the correct folders. And the game would not launch.

Each of the individual zip files was opened, and all the files were placed into their corresponding folders in my Fallout 3 directory

What do you mean it would not launch? Did it crash to your desktop when you started it? If so, that's usually an indication that you're missing a master file. This is why you should not toss a bunch of mods in all at once. If you do it one at a time, you can see right away where any problems are. You should remove all those mods from your Data folder and start adding them in one by one, then starting the game each time. And while you're at it, gets those extracted files organized into their own folders. You're just asking for hopeless confusion tossing everything in together like that.

I am trying to help you. But if you're going to be snotty about someone trying to give you advice, then I won't bother anymore. I'm busy enough as it is without taking time out to help you. In fact, you just earned a place on my ignore list

No, we are helping. It's just not very clear.

Everything needs to extracted to your Fallout3\Data folder so all .esp and .esm files and any meshes, textures or sounds folders show up in there http://tinypic.com/r/2upre43/7 They don't go in their own folders in \Data.

Maybe watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_ix-dOGfXs&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL will help.

Belanos is just trying to help. Imagine this:

I am painting my car. A nice 2011 Ford Mustang. (I wish...) I am repainting the entire surface of it, from blue to red. I am currently using a small easel brush, about 2x2inches in size. Belanos strolls past, and mentions that if I spray the paint on instead, I can pant the car in a matter of minutes, instead of hours, and it will look much nicer when I'm done.

Now here I can either:

a ) flip out at him because he told me to do something that I was currently not, giving me much needed constuctive criticism.
or
b ) take his advice, get the car painted in 15 minutes, and ride around town picking up the ladies in my nice shiny ride.

You my good sir, have chosen path A. Please enjoy your poorly painted car.

Hey Nesh. Question for you baed on the screenshot of you Data folder:

I don't have a fose folder in my Data folder. I followed the install instructions for 1.2 beta 2.7:

Copy the .dll files and fose_loader.exe to your Fallout 3 directory.

So, those fose files are in the main directory of my Fallout 3 folder. It seems to be working b/c I ran the game from the fose_loader and it started.

So, I wondered about whether I should have copied the entire fose_v1_2_beta2 folder into the Data folder, as your screenshot seems to suggest.

No, you have it right. That folder you see is used for various plugins that can be added to FOSE. I'm not sure if FOSE even has any frankly, but OBSE for Oblivion works the same way and there are several that will end up in that folder. Or the OBSE version. The plugins allow for different functionality that's not built into FOSE itself.

hey vladamirputan i just wanted to let you know alot of these guys are the ones working on making these mods. And like belanos said they can be VERY busy at times . And its a pretty close community meaning they talk to each other alot. AND also ive noticed they can seem like they are being mean sometimes . But its just the way it seems but most of them really are not being mean ok. So its best not to piss them off if you can help it , i just thought you should know that ok . later :foodndrink:

it looks like you open the compressed file and extracted everything as is? i usually open the compressed file and keep opening folder in the file till i get to "data" then i open it, select everything there, hit the extract button (i use .7z), and extract everything to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas\Data\. you said you used FOMM and that's great but not all mod are set to FOMM (i.e. they are not .fomod ready).

from what i see you'll notice that you have a data folder within the data folder. that's wrong, move everything from that second datat folder and put it in the origanol data folder. you also need to go into the "25mmAAcannon", "187GURLZ", "Awsome Perks", "Pip-Boy 1337 Model 1.1", "Plasma and Laser Cross-repairOnly" and "TYPE3Bonusmesh" files till you find the "data" folder and move the contents of that "data" folder to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas\Data\. done. clear as mud.

if you have compatablity issues your on your own.

the helping part of this is over. now to the rant.

it seems to me that you didn't read through many of the readmes or take a hole lot of time to go through the many resources for adding mods to the game. this community has been very helpful to me through the years, inspite of many stupid questions on my part, but they do get alittle short with people you haven't explored all the options. i cant say i blame them.
