Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere

This is the number one reason why I know skyrim will be awesome. A game can have some flaws to it but if the atmosphere is good then it will be a game you remember for a long time. Morrowind had a great atmosphere but oblivion did not. Oblivion's color palate was just too shiny and boring. And the landscapes were just too plain. From the interior shots of Skyrim and the forrest shots alone you get a sense of what the game will be like and the emotions that will stir up in you when you play. Plus from everything i'm hearing Skyrim will is taking all of the best Oblivion mods combining them and perfecting them. So everyone can set aside there fears, wipe away the tears (no halberds), and get ready for a great game.

I'm also very excitet to hear that eight people are working on the dungeons this time. I didn't know how many were working on Oblivions before but when I heard it was only one guy, and now the have eight! I just know the dungeons are going to look amazing this time around.

Oblivion wasn't just one more game I played. It was one of my favorite gaming experiences. Skyrim will have to seriously deliver in order to improve it. I'm sure it will.

Oh... Seemed fairly obvious to me that you were implying you were going to murder all the barmaids. I assumed by decapitation. My bad.

I came to this thread and was just like "...WTF?"

"I want to meet all the women."
"It's a shame they haven't confirmed decapitation."

Seriously... WTF?

Movie reference ftw.

That one pic with the dragon standing on the pillar with the huge mountains in the background just looks amazing. Skyrim's going to be visually stupendous. Maybe not so much when we get five feet away in first person, but when we look out at the open world its going to be simply mind blowing.

The screenshots so far do seem to speak of a better atmosphere than Oblivion created, at least prior to the use of some of the mods I now have installed, and Bethesda's promises lead me to expect the same. Although I'm a little dissappointed by the brightness of the one interior shot of a dungeon we've seen so far, but that's just one screenshot whose atmosphere I have any criticisms for, so that's pretty good, and it's only one screenshot, so maybe other dungeons will be darker, and this is the sort of thing I'd imagine could be changed before release.

Of course, there are factors that contribute to a game's atmosphere which can't be seen in static screenshots as well, animations, for example, can help a lot. Past Elder Scrolls games suffered in this regard due to bad character animations, will Skyrim be better? I hope so. Sound is also important for atmosphere, and in any game with a clearly defined story, the writing will also ultimately effect the feel of the game, those factors of course can't be seen in screenshots. Hopefully, Skyrim won't dissappoint there either. But only time will tell, the few samples of in-game music and sound effects don't tell us much because how well they build the game's atmosphere will ultimately depend on how well they're used. No matter how good your music or sound effects are, its not going to help you're atmosphere if they're not used in appropriate places.

Well, this is what Todd said in the last podcast:

"Oblivion, for what it is, can be very kind of classic, traditional fantasy. There's not a lot of unique style to the world. Whereas Skyrim I definitely think has a unique style. We got better at that, and we push it, like what is the culture of these people? So it has its own flavor. It's definitely grittier. It's lower tech. The world's lived in. The ruins feel ancient and thousands of years old. We're also careful in Skyrim of the various ages of, 'when was this built?' Where Oblivion everything can feel like everything in this town was built on the same day. There's a more unique and a better flavor to the province of Skyrim and the game Skyrim than we had in Oblivion and Cyrodiil."

Well, the forest on the screenshot where the guy is hunting looks really good,as well as the city, atmosphere wise.
But nearly all other screens look too much Oblivion. Therefore I'm not really expecting a real change (I should say improvement) in atmosphere.

Especially the troll and the lakeside screenshot almost look like a Oblivion graphic enhance.

Disagree. Similar artistic style does not lack of atmosphere equal. I found the atmosphere problems in Oblivion were more to do with setting than art style.

Well,it was my bad. What I meant was not the troll itself but the area on that screenshot.Same with the lakeside.
The lakeside picture looks pretty dull to me.It'd be another story if it turns out to be a unique sight within the game world though. But as of now,it gives me a vibe of how the landscape generally will be.

Still, all of the elements combined make the atmosphere.
So designs of individual creatures play a role as well.I don't mean that transferring the same troll design is the problem, but it'd be better if we had a unique creature like a Nix-hound equivalent. That being said, actually I just noticed that the "troll" is not that generic design-wise but having its name "troll" makes it more generic than it'd be if called something else that'd be unique to TES.
That's how atmosphere works I think.Even the change of name can affect it.

Respects.

They have made Morrowind.

They have made Fallout 3.

They have more funds, resources and man power, and have gained a lot of experience in the current hardware.

They have announced a lot of brilliant new features and ideas.

Skyrim *W-I-L-L* rock!
