Dragon Age: Origins, Awakening & DA2

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:45 am

DA2 from my point of view was a huge success. Not only do i find it a game fun to play, it has spawned some ridiculously polarised internet commentaries that have given me many laughs over these weeks :lmao: Mainly in the BW forums, mind you ;)

I found that guy hilarious who posted all those threads about the suppression of the male straight gamer. Because Anders might flirt with you. That nearly killed me. ^_^

Zuh? Seriously, someone said that? By far the most common criticism of pretty much every game ever is complaints that they cater too heavily to exactly that demographic. Most of this DA2 criticism is about it aiming toward the simplistic-action crowd.

That is what I found so hilarious. Anders dare consider flirting, and the game is automatically a spawn of rainbowy evil.
Simplistic action crowd, my rear. Did those guys ever play nightmare, or even hard? ^_^

Great. Now it's also dumbing down if every of the romanceable characters is bi-sixual. Apart from it not being uncommon among Thedas' elves, Isabella and Anders always having been that way, and that companion who is not only straight but also chaste. That's the way of talking I despise, everywhere on the web, in real life, anywhere. We shouldn't discuss whether or not games are changing (News at eleven, they are! News at eleven in 1990, the same!), but how people should approach discussions in the first place.

Rant over. Seeing how that thread derails makes me kind of happy that this board here is a little more strict. There are too many weird people everywhere, at least I'm somewhat safer here. ^_^

Why? Because they said they are not suddenly turning around AGAIN, destroying any credibility, to pursue the clunkier route of Origins without all the changes they made? Seriously. Cheer the hell up. ^_^

(Also, Bethesda makes a completely different kind of RPG.)

Well, at least you think they had credibility left to destroy.

I know you like the game. I'm actually a little sorry that I can't bring myself to do that. From BG, BG2, NWN/Shadows/Hordes, KotoR, well, you get the idea. Every pc game that they've done, I've gotten. Started pre-ordering with Shadows. MEpc was the first one I didn't, due to EA's drm. I did pre-order Origins; I followed it too long on the Bioware forums to let my dislike of anything tainted by EA kill my interest in it. But I can't like what they've removed and changed for the sake of changing, it seems. All of the changes they made to make things "unique" made them even more generic and stereotypical for me. They could have fixed and tweaked other issues instead of completely removing them, built on what was good about Origins, but they didn't. Even the story has problems for me.

If they are going to continue everything that I strongly dislike without even attempting to fix or tweak the issues that a lot of players seem to have with the game for the next part, then I'm not going to be getting the next part, either. Ironically enough, my brother, whose game I played to see whether I could force myself to like the game, probably won't be getting it either. He lost interest in it. Too much pointlessly flashy combat and disjointed story that kept playing out the same, for him.

Level 35 is the cap for Awakening

I agree especially on the bolded part. Bioware could've made an incredible game that may or may not have exceeded Origins but would've came close. Instead though they went a different direction and the game has done more damage long term for Bioware then it has short term and it really hasn't answered or solved any problems but created new ones instead.

Well, reading through (and between the lines of) the latest dev posts in the forums (which one should read rather than short quotes and misquote from big officials, mind you), they are very well aware of most issues, and not quite pleased with the state they had to get their baby out in. That's why I won't abandon Bioware. They communicate, not necessarily directly, but they do. Whereas other devs and their forums... :whistling:

BTW, I just like how you make your point. Among the few critical people I actually understand and am able to follow. I felt this way too many times about too many things I loved, just wanting them to be good.

I agree, I haven't abadoned Bioware yet but I'm very skeptical of them now. I'm still buying ME3 but after that I will make sure that I read the reviews 1st and look at the bugs/glitches and other issues before buying a Bioware game even if I have to wait a week.

The easier thing to do is look at the DLC between the different series. This gives us a good idea of what kind of work goes into each main game. Dragon Age DLC is short, shoddy, bug ridden, and generally terrible waste of money. Mass Effect 2 DLC on the other hand while pricey (and a little on the short side, but this is a technical limitation) doesn't lose any of the epic feel or high quality feel to the game (talking story based DLC not the weapon/appearance packs). The love put into the two different lines of DLC is a vast gulf, I'm wondering if we should make a distinction between the Dragon Age Bioware team and the Mass Effect team, I honestly can't tell they work in the same company. I sure as hell hope to god no one in the Dragon Age team so much as glances at the mass effect team.

They are completely different teams and to me it's obvious that ME just gets a lot more care put into it, the game does appeal to a much wider dmeograpic i think, sci-fi fans can enjoy it's solid sci-fi but there's a solid shooter in there as well (ME2 that is) with just enough roleplaying to allow some interesting things to happen. Take the Overlord DLC...that last choice, I knew what my character would do (Renegade, one life weighed against many and all that) but seeing the guy made it so hard to press that button, that was just a heartbreaking scene, plain and simple. Considering that, it doesn't really surprise me that ME2 gets more attention development wise.

I blame the graphics as Mass Effect's Unreal Engine is much better then DA's engine. I think the DA engine has the same problem that the Gamebryo engine had and that it's buggy. Although if Bioware wouldn't have rushed the game then DA2 wouldn't have had as many bugs.

I do agree with the DLC part. Mass Effect's DLC are a million times better then DA's DLC's. I'm still angry about Witch Hunt.
