[WIP] Project Genesis

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:39 am

Uhhhg its almost done! I am cluttering the final cells, then I will edit the final voice files and it will essentially be done. I also will not be generating lip files for most of the remaining dialog. I think this will be alright, since most of the mod is not voiced anyway, they wont be missed, and it saves me like 4-6 hrs of incredibly tedious work I should have spread throughout creation of the mod.

I just want to say this now to get it out of the way. As I am finishing this and really putting it under review, the mod is not all too fantastic as a whole. This is my first mod ever, and I have learned SO much since starting it. So, parts of it are horrible, and were bad ideas and will never be done again by me. But, parts of it are fantastic, and will leave you agasp. I honestly have come incredibly close to scrapping the mod all together over the past month, considering just starting anew with NV and using all I have learned to then make truely fantastic mods. My future mods should be about 5x as good as this. I have learned so many things you should NOT do when modding and those things have killed chunks of the mod. The main thing I did that was a big mistake is the shear size of the mod. It adds about 21 new cells to the game. (Interior spaces) and for ONE person to clutter, that is an immensely huge job. Cluttering one average size cell very WELL takes 10-20hrs of work. So a few of the cells are a tad bit below par. My future mods will focus on more like 2 cells in the entire mod. But you will be in them for most of it, and they will be the most damn well made interiors you have ever seen in your entire life. I also would not really consider this mod 'official' and it should probably not be played with a legit savegame, due to its crazed nature.

So, this mod are pretty much a giant mish-mosh of me learning, experimenting, and figuring things out with the geck. I think overall you guys will like it. (as it appears most of the flaws are only really apparant to me) I just wanted to say my future work will probably be EVEN better than this is, in all its crazy greatness.

All that said, I plan on finishing the mod tonight, then testing it vigorously throughout. I believe I can release it late tomorrow. Thank you everyone who supported me throughout the last 11 months while I made this. I would have quit in several places had it not been for the encouraging comments made by some of you guys out there.

Haha, I sure am.

I did not finish today, as I got Battlefield Bad Company 2:Vietnam and played that for a chunk of this morning. I then went and saw Tron: Legacy in 3D. (now my eyes hurt, and about 2/3 of it isn't actually 3D so dont waste your money on it, watch it in 2D.)

Anyway, I only have 1 quest left to edit dialog for, and I'm doing that now. Then tomorrow morning I will test and then release later tomorrow, I promise. :P I'll work all night if I have too as I really don't want to push back releasing this anymore! You guys can expect release between like 2-6pm MT.

EDIT: I just finished the dialog!! I have like 3 sound files (its dialog, but they are not spoken from an NPC) and I'm done with the mod! I will do like 2 full run throughs tomorrow morning and then release.

Well. Its done. :D :D :D :D

I stayed up until 1am editing stuff, I havent eaten yet today, and I just spent the last 7 hrs vigorously testing and bug fixing the mod. Like 3 of them were on stupid navmesh bug it took me forever to fix. :P

The mod is ready to package and all. I have to go to the store though, and then eat dinner. (Great timing, I know) But, first thing when I get back I am making the nexus page, and release thread. I'll post here when its all set up and ready to go. Woooooot.

No problem. :D

I do plan on continuing to make quest mods for the next few years. (up through college and beyond, as I want to be a video game content designer) The only thing is my future mods will be MUCH smaller. I spend 11 months on this and it adds like 3-6 hrs of gameplay. In the future I will spend more like 1-3 months on a mod, and it will add maybe 30-60 minutes. I also will make my future mods smaller, and higher quality. As this one had my kinda stretched out due to its immense size.

Hey, you were an important part to making sure its bug free and works properly. You will probably be one of the first I go to when I need testers for my future quest mods! (though I plan all of them to be in NV)

Also, can you guys move it over to the Release thread? :P I want to get all my comments in there so I'm not taking up two spots on the forums board with topics about the exact same thing. Thanks!
