Oblivion vet looking for mods for Fallout 3

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:52 am

Hi all,

I played Oblivion heavilly modded after getting frustrated with the vanilla game. I just started Fallout 3 and I know it's not a good idea to mod until at least going through the game once, but I learned to absolutley HATE a lot of things about Oblivion and am already seeing similar things. I am wondering if there are mods to take care of the same things that I used in Oblivion, namely:

- the level scaling. I am not even sure, does Fallout 3 use the same awful scaling that Oblivion did, where a goblin was just as tough at level 15 as it was at level 1? I used KCAS.

- The All Seeing Eye: Crime annoyed me to no end, I could find some drifter out in the middle of nowhere, kill him and suddenly the entire planet knew about it. I think the Oblivion version did something to the guards to make them more logical, like if they didnt actually see something they were not omniscient.

- waiting/resting anytime.anywhere: I never want to see "You cannot rest while enemies are nearby"!

For now I am not looking for anything beyond these things, if they are available I would love to get them going so I don't get frustrated before I even start!

I have the Steam game of the year version if that matters.

The first 2 points, especially the first, are significantly improved vs OB.

Most/all NPCs you encounter outside of the few settlements are fair game. Perhaps if you make it your passion to kill outcasts or slavers they will eventually all become hostile... not sure. Within settlements it's still quite tricky to commit unprovoked murder and if detected all residents turn hostile... Unlike in OB, in FO3 there is no universal law or police- you make the law! The http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Portal:Fallout_3 has lots of game mechanic info.

Waiting/resting/fast traveling is still restricted when enemies are nearby but I can't offer any mods that change this.

IMO, even for a first timer, Marts Mutant Mod and Weapon Mod Kits will enrich the game greatly without changing the fundamentals. After you get a taste, look into FWE and EVE. Together these 4 mods fill out much of the potential of the game. I haven't tried Arwen's Realism Tweaks myself but there's lots of good stuff there too.

A while back, Mezmorelda put together a very nice list + description of mods http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1056342-mezs-gameplay-and-immersion-mod-list/.

As you know from OB, read the available info thoroughly... enjoy!

No, it doesn't work the same way in Fallout. Each actor type has a limit they can achieve and they won't get any tougher after that. You do however run into other, tougher types of monsters as you level up. For instance, when you start the game your main enemy in the Wasteland will be Raiders, who never get higher than level 9. But at that point you start running into tougher creatures like Yao Guai or Deathclaws. Deathclaws in particular are things to be feared until you're at least level 12 or so, at which point you'll start encountering Albino Radscorpions. Provided you have the Broken Steel addon.

- The All Seeing Eye: Crime annoyed me to no end, I could find some drifter out in the middle of nowhere, kill him and suddenly the entire planet knew about it. I think the Oblivion version did something to the guards to make them more logical, like if they didnt actually see something they were not omniscient.

Fallout has a different system in the form of Karma. If you murder someone out in the waste you take a Karma hit, becoming evil, and characters will start to respond differently once you reach a certain point. You can also adjust your Karma by doing nice things while out in the Wasteland as well. But unless you kill someone within eyesight, or steal something when someone's watching, you're not held accountable. As mentioned, there is no law out in the Wasteland, it's every man and woman for themselves. It's only within the settlements themselves where you have to behave yourself.

- waiting/resting anytime.anywhere: I never want to see "You cannot rest while enemies are nearby"!

Well that just makes sense, you wouldn't want to be taking a nap when there's enemies around who can kill you while you sleep.

And I disagree about Mart's Mutant Mod, it will change your game fairly drastically IMO. If you want to stick with non-gameplay mods, go for things like DarN's UI, the unofficial patches, and maybe a hotkey mod. There's only a couple of those available though.

Perhaps http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8050 would interest you.
http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10607 won't change your gameplay, but will get rid of that nasty green tint that you see everywhere
http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6170 goes great with the above mod.

I know some or maybe all of these aren't quite what you are looking for, however they do not change the actual gameplay, so your experience will not be hampered in any way.

There are several slower leveling mods out there which limits the amount of xp earned or increases the amount needed to level up. Again, not sure if it's what you are looking for, but worth mentioning anyway.

I think dynamic weather makes night extremely dark or is it the enhanced weather, and in vanilla fallout theres no night vision items to compensate for it, so i suggest you turn off the darker night feature.

It's dynamic weather. I may have to turn that feature off myself because it's nigh impossible to see anything at night.
