Unique/Legendary Monsters and Beasts

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:57 am

Well, it's self explanatory really. Would you want to see uniquely different variations of standard beasts?

An example would be a great mammoth that is larger and has more tusks than other mammoths. It could be talked about in rumors by townsfolk, and you could go out and hunt the beast down and find some piece of a legendary suit of armor or what not. Hell, maybe you could even take its hide and create your own suit of legendary armor.

What do you all think? Is this something that strikes you as interesting?

I like the idea alot. Borderlands did it and even Red Dead had legendary versions of many wildlife creatures that were stronger and looked different.

Edit- Also is that a MewTwo avatar? I havent had anything to do with Pokeman in forever but that looks completely badass haha.

This is one of those things that everyone will say yes to. Who wouldn't want more content, especially unique content?

Not a big deal to me but I have nothing against it.

They've done it in past games(giant mudcrab, dreugh warlord, white guar, etc.) so I'd assume it's already in their plans.

I want unique monsters, but I don't want them to turn into mini-bosses. A good, challenging fight every once in a while would be fun and a great way to try out the new combat system, but they should save the real tough bastard for the end of the game (by which I mean main quest). Also, they don't need to be huge (like in Gears or Borderlands), just distinctive. Add spikes or some neat colors.

The rewards for beating one shouldn't always be gold or a spell, either. Maybe just a change in the surroundings (i.e. KVATCH GETTING REBUILT w/o mods). Who knows, maybe the tavern keeper in that town that wasn't really there before will give you a discount. :foodndrink:

I would like this a lot. Different colored creatures, ones with added features, a Sasquatch wandering the wilderness, etc. GTA San Andreas had rumors of things like that in the wilderness and it generated huge amounts of buzz. Of course with the CS that would be debunked or proven quickly but still.

Larger, stronger animals yes. Extra tusks or sabre-teeth? No thanks. There shouldn't be a huge amount of genetic abnormalities at the same time.

It sounds like another good way to incorporate Radiant Story in quests from NPCs.

I liked the Jaguar hunt in Red Dead. That b***ard came out of nowhere and knocked me down. I had only seconds before I got up and let him have both barrels of my sawed off. :whistling:

I want Udyrfrykte.

I thought of the Udyrfrykte Matron when I read this thread. And yeah, definitely. Unique boss-type monsters would be great. Adds some extra excitement to exploring because you know you might run into one.

-Hell yeah!
Great, and very easily implemented feature that improves my enjoyment of RPGs a lot. The big "hero vs. monster" battles are a significant part of why I love TES games.

-Challenging, but not so much as to require an OP character.
Greater, even extreme challenge is welcomed, but I'd rather a general balance was maintained to allow less-optimal character archetypes to still be able to take on some of the monster variants.

-Yes; I want them to look badass in comparison to others.
The more dramatic the visual distinction the better, within reason. Mammoths have brown fur? The unique/legendary hostile mammoth should have blood-stained black fur. But even very minor mesh/texture changes or size differences are good.

I always found it to be quite common to see stronger variants of the same generic monsters in video games. What I would like to see is truly legendary creatures that actually have their own models, textures, animations and sounds (and loot!).

So not simply slapping on an invisibility effect with some particles and call a troll the Udyrfrykte Matron (or a whining Altmer as Mannimarco for that matter), but legendary creatures that actually feel like they are legendary. ;)

Not all of them would need their own unique model, but I'd love to hear campfire tales of a giant wolf (like http://www.freewebs.com/ulfhednarkindred/Fenris%20wolf%20large.jpg) and actually finding it (with unique texture and more powerful combat sounds) in some remote region with more than a 'oh, a big wolf' feeling :P

true! But Beth designers visits these forums from time to time so the OP may bring more attention to a cool idea. I would like to add to the "making creature armor" myself. I say take whatever part of the beast Bethesda would want and let us make a trophy out the item. Could be possible with one of the many side jobs they are creating I am sure. Perhaps even wear the trophy like The Witcher

Or how bout a bounty board like in final fantasy 12 for example... you take a mark, find it and slay it, then return for your reward? Sounds good to me :)

The bounty board would be a great idea for random quests that require very little planning - kill a random monster, get some random loot. Rinse, lather, repeat.
But I like the idea of truly unique monsters. They could have as much or as little story as possible. Personally, I always truly enjoyed solving an unnamed quest. Don't tell me I'm doing a quest until something unique happens...

Not sure if this is ralated to the topic at hand but I am still wondering how Dragons and Giants will work, will these foes be so strong that we will have to either try and avoid their gaze or find inventive ways to kill them (dropping a boulder on their head or luring them into a pit of spikes) or will we just run up swinging a claymore at them like everything else?

The bigger the better, generally speaking. Also, it'd be nice if their bodies were crammed with a busload of treasure.

I'd like some insanely powerful ice trolls or something... It'd be great having to use the enviroment to kill it and not be able to just run up and slash, use healing spells, slash it repeat.
