Problem with computer

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:54 am

Yesterday, my brother was playing STALKER and the computer crashed. Now, this had happened before and it worked perfectly fine after I restarted it. However, this time, I am having issues. One of them is that it takes forever for the computer to boot. It literally took an hour to get to the login screen. This is obviously not normal, but that's one thing that happens when it starts up. The other thing that sometimes happens is that Windows is trying to load files, and it always hangs. I left the computer running for at least twenty minutes and it did not do anything. Unless I'm mistaken, it always freezes at "Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys". I'm not the best with computers, but I'm thinking that something got corrupted. I don't want to reinstall Windows though unless it is the only option. Any ideas on what is going on?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it's hanging on you in safe mode if you mean trying to load files (since normal boot usually doesn't show this -- also not sure what OS you're using), which is bad. Maybe try using your OS disc to repair?

Oops, forgot to mention that I'm on Vista and it hangs only when I try to boot into safe mode. And I don't even think I have an OS disc. Would that be the only option?

I can't think of many options you have besides a boot disc of some sort (in this case OS disc) if you can't even load safe mode..

Are you loading safe mode with the least amount of possible drivers?

Uh, okay, well, this is new. Computer just successfully booted up and I logged in and everything in safe mode. Would it be safe to restart my computer or is there anything specific I should do?

If possible I'd try to find out what drivers that file is part of and either reinstall or if you feel safe disabling it, or disabling it in your windows config file to stop from trying to load, perhaps that method might work. Safest bet might be just to try and find new drivers for it.

I don't think you should just reboot though. It could very well be one of those scenarios where you boot up and it does it again for god knows how long. That's the kind of thing that makes me go Office Space on hardware.

I had to reboot my computer since my keyboard and mouse decided to stop working.

I think I'm just going to backup my things and reinstall Windows. I guess that isn't so bad, since I haven't reinstalled Windows in years. Now I just need safe mode to work again.

Edit: Would it be okay to backup everything to my E:\ drive since I'm reinstalling Windows on my C:\ drive, or would the stuff on there be affected too?

I am not expert, but that is what I do. I only have one hard drive, but it's partitioned (is that the word?) as C:\ and D:\ and I save everthing to D drive and nothing is touched there. Again I am not expert so I am not sure what can happen.

Well, I managed to boot up the computer with safe mode and I'm currently backing up all my things to my E:\ drive. Hopefully it'll work. At the very least I have my important things backed up.

That's great you can back up your stuff, that is the most important thing. I would suggest reinstalling, that should fix it. Let's hope you have no virus or anything like that.

So after a couple of days of fiddling around, I was able to install Windows 7. Now I know why the computer was running so slowly. I ran DXDIAG, and it seems like my computer isn't recognizing my CPU. Is there anything that can be done? Any more info needed? I really do not have the money for a new computer right now, so I would really appreciate any help.

That sounds like a problem with the motherboard drivers. Go to the site for whoever made it and download new drivers.
