Battlespire for download?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:24 am

Yes, if it were up to me, I'd leave it in a graphic format, because that's half the fun of reading the manual.

Half the fun of reading the manual is waiting for several seconds between each page, as the bloated and unoptimized piece of crap that is Adobe Acrobat struggles to display page-sized graphics? I think not. If you're not OCRing them, just leave them as a bunch of jpg files, zip or rar the bunch, and give it the .cbz or .cbr extension so that they can be read by a lightweight, fast, and smooth application such as http://www.toggle.com/lv/group/view/kl39723/CDisplay.htm or http://comical.sourceforge.net/.

I'd just like to mention that many of the creatures looked much better than their later, Morrowind/Oblivion counterparts. Skill over technology.

There are plenty of PDF readers around that are faster than Adobe's. I should dig around again and see if I can find one with a decently modern GUI. I fiddled with those more when I spent a lot of time on Linux machines.

I guess I must have forgot about mentioning Adobe Acrobat, because you obviously saw it somewhere in my post.

I don't care about your scanner knowledge at all, and I have no idea why you're bringing it into the thread.

To sum up what I said; I like reading manuals because of the design and artwork, not necessarily just for the information. My point (again) is that including a manual with Daggerfall would've accomplished nothing because all of the information (and more) is online.

Man.. What kind of scanners are you guys using? I have a fairly nice Scanjet 7100c here with ADF. I've used OmniPage, Adobe, and one other OCR utility I can't remember, and none of it is that straight forward for effectively scanning existing documentation. Now, I'll be the first to admit I've been left to fend for myself in trying to negotiate problems, but I've just never had much luck scanning text. Of course, if you want it to remain a dumb graphic format, that's fairly easy, but if you have to take a published booklet, open each page, scan & ocr it, and then correct errors in text & formatting, I don't see that being an hour. How many pages was the manual? (I think I still have it somewhere, but finding it may take some time)

I agree that a properly formatted searchable text PDF of the Daggerfall manual would take much more than one hour to create, but I also know that it wouldn't take weeks of man hours to create. Recently I needed to OCR a 300-page document. Not having a working flat-bed scanner handy, I had to settle for photographing the pages. It took less than seven hours to photograph the pages, process them through OCR, and proofread the entire document. The Daggerfall manual has only 1/3 the page count, is pretty light on actual text, and doesn't use particularly complex formatting. Sure there are images to contend with, but there's not an unmanageable amount of them, and many of them would require no special effort to place. Based on personal experience, I think the Daggerfall manual could be converted to a PDF with sufficient ease that I'd seriously contemplate doing so if I had a printed copy of the manual and some sort of assurance from Bethesda that such a project would be tolerated.

Maybe they're keeping the manual hard-to-get so that people who own the retail editions can still feel special? :P

How much do you want for it? If you could email your response to lemondemon72@gmail.com, I'd appreciate it a lot.

While we're at it, let's get Julian LeFay, Eric Heberling, and Ted Petersen back! :goodjob:

Together, the four of you could easily overthrow the evil Todd Howard.

YES! Bring back the DREAM-TEAM :D :D
('Jagar Tharn' can stay on, but this would bring back some much needed balance to the force ;) )

I think Battlespire would be a really corny 20th anniversary release. Maybe it could be bundled with Redguard too.

However, 5 year anniversaries come by more frequently than new TES games. Eventually Bethesda will run themselves into bankruptcy, or have to start coming up with some more clever giveaways. :)

I'm trying to decide if I want to get Battlespire or not. I read a review, it says the combat is tough. The graphics are eye-watering. Apparently the Voice Acting is corny at times. But I love Daedra. I wonder why no one has re-made Battlespire for Morrowind or Oblivion? :(

http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showuser=40658 actually worked on a MW mod like that on his spare time, but eventually stopped. Don't remember why he stopped though, but he did quite a bit of it. I think I have parts of it stored on my external HD somewhere too, but not sure about that either.

Or simply just stop with the giveaways, seeing how Morrowind works on modern Windows computers without issues. I bet it will be available for sale on Steam for a long time.

Battlespire has the best dialogs and interactive characters in all the Elderscrolls series. It's not just the dialogs that are well written and make characters look alive but there's also an absurd amount of dialog options which affect the game and are fun to play. So if you enjoy this you should try getting the game because it's a unique game. It's a shame Ken Rolston didn't decide to use the same dialog system with Morrowind.

Tell me more! I read a review that describes the leveling system and the stats - that you get some sort of number of points to spend between stats, skills, spells, and starting equipment, and that you only level up once you go to the next area/level of Battlespire. Is combat very difficult? I get discouraged very easily if my character dies a lot, even if other aspects of the game are good. I read the Story of Battlespire in the Imperial Library, and I loved the Daedra dialog. I would very much be interested in the dialog trees. However, the review I read mentioned that sometimes it is very difficult to engage even plot-relevant NPCs in conversation because they all tend to be hostile.

Part of me feels that, after reading the "Story of..." for Battlespire and Redguard, I've sort of already played the game, minus technical hiccups and gameplay/bug frustrations. Given that I have already read the plot, would I really me gaining much by playing it?

@Freddo: Interesting! Could you ask him if he could release what he's worked on on TESNexus or PES? Or, if he doesn't have it anymore on his hard drive, maybe he'd let you upload the files you've got? It'd certainly be a boon to any modders who desire to take up the ambitious project of recreating the Battlespire experience with TESIII. :)

Can DOSBox make games use a game controller? I can't use WASD like I used to. :( If DOSBox can't directly do that, then will JoyToKey still work to make a DOSBox-run game use the Game controller?

EDIT: And thanks for the links, I'm looking at videos right now. :)

You have read the plot at the imperial library? I don't recall if the plot story shows all the possible ways to interact with characters and all the choices they offer. It's very different to play with good characters like these. As for combat it's passable. Just remember that you can run around them until they waste all their spells and they will be a lot easier to fight. Not to mention they will fight each other if they get a spell hit from a friend.

Ah, silly AI. :P

I laughed when I saw in a youtube video the 'duo-dextrous' ability of the PC - i.e. the character has two right hands. How ever did that slip by testing?

I really wish there was a Battlespire demo, but I suppose I'll make do with the youtube videos. =/
