Please help with low framerate

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:34 am

I just started modding oblivion and my framerate goes down to 15fps as soon as I leave the sewers. I have QTP3 redimized and 512 normals alond with OBGE running. My setup is

3.14ghz core2duo
XFX ATI 4890HD
4gb
Windows 7 RC Ultimate

What can I do to improve the framerate?

I've instarted Distant land Optimized at 50% too.

Thank you so much for any help, I'm at my wits end.

I tried installing QTP3, not the redimized version alond with no LOD's or Normals and I get the same framerate even though there's a lot more Vram consumption going on. So what's going on, is it my ram or cpu?

Can you post your complete mod list?

What sort of framerates do you get with zero mods installed?

I'm sorry, I seem to have forgotten everything. I spent so much time modding this game in the past lol. How do I post my load order? I get 60fps without mods

+1 to Goth's requests.

Also, where is Oblivion installed? Might or might not be directly relevant, but it's advisable to *not* use the default location anyway.

Hm... also, use real Windows 7, not the RC. This is just a good idea in general.

edit: And, make sure you have the latest updates for Windows (only possible with the real thing, I believe) and the latest drivers for your GPU, etc.

edit2: How are your framerates and experiences with other games, by the way?

edit3: Which parts of OBGE are enabled, and with what settings? Additionally, which version of OBGE is it (i.e., how recent are the files) ?

That sounds fine. So yeah, it could just be down to mods.

I use Godrays and SSAO with OBGE and I have the latest version installed. It just doesn't make sense that with my setup I would be getting such low framerates. I plav COD 4 and Crisis and gamer settings just fine.

I haven't tried a 4890 on Oblivion, so it's hard to gauge how it should work, but all the same, QTP3 + RAEVWD + OBGE (in particular SSAO) can *kill* framerates, that's for sure.*

Which SSAO is it, by the way? (There are two.)

* Especially with other things like All Natural, Enhanced Vegetation and so on.

edit: Another question (I simply don't know either way) - is ScreenEffects + ScreenControls totally compatible with the latest OBGE? I thought it was based off an earlier plugin, but for all I know, it'd be 100% OK.

Try running without RAEVWD and see what that does for you - great mod, but can be a real frame rate killer

I use Godrays and SSAO with OBGE and I have the latest version installed.

Try turning them off and test. The OBGE projects are trying to get the Oblivion engine to do things it wasn't built to do, so it's no surprise, really, if they affect performance. If turning off the effects ups your framerate, there you go. If you have concerns about the OBGE stuff, best to ask in the official thread. The guys who are making the shaders, etc., might be the only guys who really know how they work.

EDIT: From the OBGE FAQ, in the first post of the current thread: "Q: SSAO demolishes my FPS; any ideas?
A: First, try the SSAO Performance shader, which has a slightly lower quality effect, but a great reduction in performance hit over the full SSAO shader. The easiest way to improve your frame rate while using the full SSAO shader is to reduce the sample size, and correspondingly increase the sample area. BDBB recommended values of:
ssao_sample_size = 1
ssao_sampling_area = 9.2
END EDIT

It just doesn't make sense that with my setup I would be getting such low framerates. I plav COD 4 and Crisis and gamer settings just fine.

You might as well get over this thought. Oblivion is, what, 5 years old? The engine wasn't optimal then, and it isn't optimal now. It wasn't designed to run on the kind of system you have, so it doesn't take full advantage of the hardware. Everybody here is modding the game, and everybody's performance suffers as a result. Oh, well.

I got rid of RAEVWD and saw my framerate go from 15fps to 60fps. Too bad, I liked that mod.

RAEVWD is highly configurable. Read through the readme to learn about not installing city architecture, etc. The full package does come with quite a hit, but I use it to see distant forts, ruins, etc. to make exploring more fun, and I don't get as bad a hit as you report, and I have a worse computer.

Tried the full package myself and loved it, bit too much of an fps hit. Just about to config it myself as i have to agree with gothemasticator, not really fussed about city architecture and all that, but being able to see distant ruins forts and such really makes the game so much more fun :)
