Nifskope question

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:06 am

How do you make shadows on the mesh? For example, on the mushroom trees, the bottom of the mesh is always darker than the top, but this only shows up in nifskope. How do you put it on yourself?

Thanks in advance :)

That's because the viewport is shaded. To do that to the mesh itself, you'll probably have to modify the textures.

Sorry, what's the viewport?

EDIT: And it definitely does exist on the meshes, beyond the normal shading applied for perspective. Just take a mushroom tree from SI, and turn it upside down in the CS, and you'll notice that it is much darker on the top than it should be.

Those shadows are called vertex colors. The easiest way to change or add those colors is with a 3D modeling program like 3ds Max or Blender.

You can also do this with NifSkope if you prefer: The vertex colors are listed in the NiTriStrip block as an array property. In the Vertex Colors array each vertex of the model has an entry of which you can specify the color. Note that the Vertex Colors array requires the Has Vertex Colors property (which should be right above it) to have a value of yes.

The viewport is NifSkope's render window. The area that displays the mesh.

@shademe:  sorry, that's pretty obvious.

@Qazaaq: Yes, that's what I mean! How do I go about changing them in blender? I'd prefer to do it that way, rather than fiddling with nifskope. I've never really gotten the hang of nifskope.

If you're comfortable with Blender I definitely recommend that. Just select Vertex Paint mode, choose a color in the Paint panel (adjust opacity and/or size) and start painting.

I'm sure you can find a video tutorial on youtube. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5L1di_FSqk)
