H-h-holy Stuttering, Batman!

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:24 am

So, new PC, maybe I can finally run MMM with increased spawns?

Well, maybe. I haven't gotten that far yet, because while my framerate seems to be silky smooth most of the time, every second or so there's a little stutter. This is quite irritating.
There's no difference between all graphical settings on high and on low, there's no difference with or without texture packs, I can be in a tiny hut or in the wasteland and the stutter cares not.

I have plenty of free RAM, and nothing hitting my CPU, my hard drive lies idle until fallout requests data, which is given to it at well below top read speed with the highest response times at around 40ms. It's never hitting swap.

Where's the bottleneck? Why am I stuttering when on every measure I have room to spare!

While certainly far from the machine to end all machines, if I could at least track down the bottleneck I could attempt to reduce it!

Oh, sorry, I meant to write that it was the same with or without FSR, though I didn't change any of the settings.

Yeah I'd read up on changing heap settings.

Skyranger~1 is, thankfully, currently very active on http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1167762-relz-oblivion-stutter-remover/ - I'm sure he could field F3 questions though. And I think also on the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1140472-relz-beta-new-vegas-stutter-remover/. Probably better to ask there.

The two settings to alter are in this section:
Heap = {	_comment = Heap replacement can produce MAJOR improvements in performance on Oblivion at a significant cost in stability	_comment = It crashes instantly on Fallout3, and would only produce a small performance improvement there anyway	_comment = It is not supported at all on Fallout: New Vegas at this time	_comment = Algorithms: 1=FastMM4 (requires external dll), 2=Microsoft (slow on XP), 3=SimpleHeap1, 5=ThreadHeap2	iHeapAlgorithm = 5	bEnableProfiling = 0	iHeapSize = 250	bEnableMessages = 0	iGenericFreeDelay = 0}
Try changing the heap algorithm and or IHeapSize.

But Algorithm first.

You don't have quad core, but do you have 64 bit OS? If so check out the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1118450-oblivion-and-memory-usage/

... and ask Skyranger - that guy knows things.

Hm, I changed the algorithm to 3 (SimpleHeap1) and there was no stuttering in a few moments of testing, so that may have solved the issue. If not, thanks anyway, I'll ask SR~1 if it returns - guys who know things about stuff are always good guys to know.

Thanks :)
