Japan Earthquake and computer prices

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:49 pm

Most suppliers have about two weeks worth of excess inventory of semiconductor parts and other components, according to IHS iSuppli, so the shortages probably won't be felt until the end of March or the beginning of April. However, the psychological impact of the earthquake is already affecting some prices, causing a 10 percent increase in higher-density NAND flash and a 7 percent rise in DRAM pricing in spot market trading.

The shortages and their influence on prices could last until the third quarter, forecasts IHS.

Its not just PC related items. I saw a report that said Japan makes a number of small electronic parts used in manufacture of everything from consumer electronics to home appliances to cars. The bad thing is that even though a lot of assembly has been moved out of Japan to lower cost countries these "nuts and bolts" used in the assembly process oftentimes are not made anywhere else but Japan. Talk about putting all the world's eggs in one fragile basket.

Japan is the least fragile of all our baskets, mate. If anything like this happened anywhere else in the world I seriously doubt they'd get back upon their feet as soon as the Japanese are.

I think he meant that a land like japan is prone to natural disasters.

Whew! Good thing I got my computer before they went up! Does it have any effect on Macintosh? Or is it just for PC?

1. Macs are PCs

2. Apple isn't (for the most part) a hardware maker: almost all parts in a Mac are built by some other company.

3. Apple doesn't have a secret supply of rare materials, they buy them from the general market like anyone else

4. Macs are PCs

Everyone knows that Steve Jobs makes his computers with the tears of toddler slaves and the skin of unicorns. He figures that using pure things in the construction of his devices will disguise the fact that he is a dreadlord sent to subjugate mankind and bend us to his immortal will.

And I think Veeno means that even though Japan has lots of natural disasters, it took a massive one to really knock them around, and despite the severity and damage they'll probably still be up and running again faster than pretty much any other country would.

Yeah I am sure getting 8 gb of ram in time is all great but what about all the lives lost and people homeless and what not? Again the insensitivity of some BSF memebers strike again. Oh boo hoo, you would have paid what $20-$100 more. :shakehead:

You saving a $100 while so many died and homeless and going hungry with no where to live, just doesn't measure up.

I didn't say they didn't have the ability to recover quickly. When you have a selection of critical components being almost exclusively produced in one country a disaster like this highlights how unwise that is. Even a couple weeks or months disruption is going to have serious effects worldwide on the manufacture of many goods dependent on those parts. The supply line is fragile in a situation like this.

Because if you care about buying RAM in the nick of time, that means you don't give a [censored] about victims?

Oh get off your soapbox. Just because people are discussing some of the more economic or mundane consquences of a tragedy doesn't mean they suddenly don't care about the lives lost. Honestly, you've been far too willing to get on your soapbox as of late. Take a chill pill. We're not suddenly horrible monsters because we're not bawling our eyes out whenever discussing serious issues.
