Spelunkin'

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:17 am

SO i went spelunkin in this new world that is oblivion. I found a sideways cave as soon as i walked in there i found a bunch of flies that shot fire.
I feel like i have explored every part of this cave all i have found was a bunch of potions, dead soldiers, some letters that you need to translate but i still don't get what it's saying.
Is there something i missed?
What was the meaning of this cave?

There's no deeper meaning to the tablets with translations on. They're just a bit of flavour text saying the ayleid city down there was destroyed by the daedric prince Meridia or one of their lackeys.

Not every cave or ruin you drop into will have a boss, quest or uber loot in it. It's all just a surprise, that's part of the fun!

the important thing to remember about caves/dungeons is that as you level up, the loot will get significantly better from them, which will increase the incentive to go dungeon crawling.

as for Ragnarok, he's interested in everything having to do with the arcane, so necromancer/conjuror lairs and dungeons filled with undead are his favorite places to go.

Most of the loot is random. There are, however, certain dungeons that contain certain enemies, i.e. necroomancers, vampires, bandits, marauders, or beasts. depending on what you want to fight, you can go to different dungeons

You get different loot from what you fight.

There'll be specific monster drops, like those imps that attacked you can drop "imp gall," and mudcrabs will drop "crab meat." Humanoids will often drop a little gold, and sometimes potions, plus you can loot their gear. What appears is generated randomly, but it'll always be from a list of certain things.

Containers are usually random too, but over time you'll figure out the kinds of things to be found in crates, barrels, chests, and sacks.

Some of the dungeons are involved in a quest, like "go to [specific location] and get [specific item] for me," and others have interesting storylines or items to discover, but most are just for exploration and looting.

Meridia is female, and is the Goddess/Daedra of life energies. She particularly despises all forms of undead. Sideways Cave is a bit of an homage to Mines of Mordor... the Ayleid desecrated a place sacred to the Goddess by digging too deeply and she was... well, not pleased. :P

In general, the loot makes sense. You wouldn't expect wild animals to have gold in their corpses, for example. The various locations will respawn if they are not revisited within a certain number of days (default = 3). So, if you go back to Sideways Cave 4 days later (or whatever you have set the respawn rate to, if you have a tool to change it), there will be new residents you'll have to deal with (and new loot, of course).

No worries, the previous poster was most likely roleplaying his character in these forums as alot do.
Most loot is random otherwise my light armoured khajiit mage would not have a complete set of enchanted heavy armour of every type, and few junk pieces of light armour.
Sideways cave is tease, just like alot of ingame content, I presume it was "dead echo" content that did not make it due to time restraints.
