How will Splash damage release PC dedicated server files?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:33 am

There is a lot of talk about Dedicated servers for the PC but I have yet to find any information regarding how the files are to be released?
Yes I have searched and yes there are references in these forums to dedicated servers for PC but I have found no definitive answers as to how the files will be released or any information about how Brink servers will be set up.
With the release now moved forward there is very little time left for server admins to prepare their servers for the coming onslaught..lol

So with this in mind would it be possible for someone from Splash Damage to provide this information please?

i.e.

1) Will the files be distributed via steams HLDS tool?

2) Will the files be distributed via another means like via Bigdownloads etc

3) or will the files be required to be uploaded to your server from your own copy of the game?

4) Are Splash Damage going to release a wiki or dedicated web page on how to set up a PC dedicated Brink server?

Many Thanks

I think it could be all of them, maybe except 3. I'm sure Steam will release one, and Splash Damage wouldn't leave its non-steam broskies out, so they will probably release it on their site. Also, I'm sure if Splash Damage doesn't release a tutorial, someone else will. Cheers!

Thanks Franky

But again its just a guess as so much about the dedicated servers for brink appear to be at the moment.

I am really hoping that someone from Splash will go on the record and spell out exactly how the files will be distrubuted and how we will be able to set up a dedicated server for PC.

Time is dwindling and it seems to me that this info could do with being released round about now..So fingers crossed..lol

Frankly, everyone who's playing BRINK is on Steam.

If you're playing BRINK on PC, you're forced to play on Steam. It's part of BRINK being Steamworks integrated.

Steam has a tab to download tools and dedicated server files, so it's as easy as a few clicks.

Seems to be an aweful of guessing going on..lol

Can someone point me to a single post made by a dev where it states how the files will be released or how we set up a dedicated Brink server?

4 weeks to go and nothing but speculation..In every forum I visit..
All i read is "Brink will be coming with dedicated servers on PC"
But it looks like no one actually knows a thing about how the dedicated server files will be released or how PC dedicated servers will be set up on dedicated boxes.
I don't believe these are difficult questions, they should be easy enough to answer for Splash, if everything is already in place as it should be with just 4 weeks to go?

Fingers crossed we get some answers very shortly...

Still no official info regarding dedicated servers for PC. Makes me think its going to be hobbled in some way. Why would developer or publisher not wish to give any details ?

Homefront gets it's dedi-files released through Steam. I wouldn't be surprised if Splash Damage did it any different.

I'm hoping (along with a great many others) that Splash are just waiting because they want to release the news in style?

Although the silence regarding server files and how to set up servers is deafening..lol

I seriously hope its not because this is going to turn into another locked server file fiasco..Like Black Ops or BFBC2??

Three days ago, badman said this:

Just to confirm, dedicated servers are still a go for PC (but not technically part of Steamworks).

I don′t know what he means exactly with "not part of Steamworks". Could mean the software will not release on Steam tools or the software is not supported by Steam... *confused*

Yeah, it could possibly be that the tools will be separate from Steam. Interesting though, because all of the games Ive played on Steam that had SDK tools made you download them through Steam.

Same here,i think Steam will be the main handler of this, for the PC side of it.

We still have some time till release, they'll announce when ready.

What they did with Homefront was absurd in my view...(regarding Server files that is).

This implies that you don't download the Server-Client through Steam.

Like many, I want to know what dedicated servers will be like to setup/Admin. I hope that they will be as usable as RTCW (marketgarden) / ET / ETQW servers. Again, Like many others here, I suspect, much of the attraction to Brink is based on Splash Damage's excellent reputation and gamer orientated focus. It would be good if someone could give us a nod regarding dedicated server files etc. I really don't want to have to go searching google on day 1 to figure it all out. I would also like to know what GSP's will be offering the game etc etc etc. Come on , give us some info please. As has been so aptly put, the silence is deafening.

What Nutty said.

I have contacted several GSP's about Brink and dedicated servers and not one of them know anything even though they have all contacted SD.

By: Nick | Posted: April 28th, 2011

We’ve always been dedicated to our PC fanbase, and with Brink hitting shelves in less than two weeks, we’re here today to clarify just what we have in store for PC players regarding dedicated server support.

One additional note before we get down to business — we’re currently shooting to have Brink available to pre-load on Steam prior to the game’s release. We’ll have more specific info on that in the days to come.
Now, let’s get this FAQing underway:

What is the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server allows anyone to run multiplayer servers for the PC version of Brink. As the server is standalone, it does not require a full version of Brink to be installed and is completely free.
Where will I be able to get the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server will be available for download via Steam prior to release. Once the server is available, you can simply browse to the Tools tab in your Steam client and grab it from there.
Will I be able to run several instances of the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server on a single machine?
Yes. The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server comes with several pre-made bat files that automatically define different ports for each instance. It’s also possible for you to set your own, custom ports.
In terms of available game options, how customizable will the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server be?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server includes several different game configuration files covering all of the regular game modes, including campaign, stopwatch, objective, and co-op challenges. In addition, there are a variety of server-side commands available that allow you to further customize your server, including team sizes, time limits and overtime, warm-up rules, friendly fire, voice chat, availability of Command Post buffs, rank restrictions, number of bots, and password.
I represent a Game Server Provider. How can my company offer servers for Brink?
Easy! Once the Standalone Dedicated Server is available on Steam, you’ll be able to start getting Brink game servers up for your customers. We’re currently aiming to have the server files available before release so you’ll be all set when the game comes out.
