I have a problem. When I try to install the latest patch for oblivion, it gets up to 15% down the bottom then comes up this error (roughly) " Old file not found, but file with same name found. File contents do not match so installer will abort". It was something along those lines... When I start Oblivion up it says in the version information that I do indeed have the latest patch, and when I start oblivion up all the sand textures (which are used on the beaches and A LOT of other things) come up as a rainbow-ish colour. They appear to be bump-maps (I think). I would appreciate help, as I can't play some new mods without the latest patch. Thinks in advance.

Old file not found usually means you are trying to install the wrong version of the patch (eg. wrong language or SI version when you don't have SI and vice-versa)

If you got the game from direct2drive, you have to get the patch from there too, not sure if that causes old file not found though.

If you previously installed a beta version of the patch you will need to do a full reinstall.

I have the retail version of Oblivion. Do I have to install other patches prior to the latest?

No, but what retail version do you have? If you have GOTY then it is already patched. Also, I have heard of that error when 1) it is already patched 2) it is cracked in some way (no-cd crack, etc.)

If you have the latest patch, then you can't patch it again!! If you are missing textures then you have a corrupt install, or a bad mod.

If the version info says the game is patched, it probably is. There's a relatively common issue where the patch fails to update the shaders properly, which in turn makes all landscape textures appear as a pink-ish map of the IC. (The fix for that is overwriting your current shaders with http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20348.) But that would affect all landscape textures, not just the sand, so I'm not sure what to think of this. Possible mod problem?

Is it Oblivion GOTY version that you have?

If it's GOTY continue with the disc2 and reboot your computer. After the reboot try to launch Oblivion again.

I purchased it from EB Games in New Zealand (where I live). It is not the GOTY edition, just the slandered edition. It says in the version number at the bottom left that I have the latest patch AFTER the patch has failed. I realize now that it is not only the sand that has gone that pinkish colour. I will try the UK version of the patch. I will try that shader thing if the UK patch doesn't work. I have no cracks or mods. It does appear as although falchya is correct though.

It's all good now! Turned out I needed the UK patch... Now on to trying to get Deadly Combat to work. I guess that's another thread for another day ...
