Marksmanship Options

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:19 pm

people not wanting certain weapons just because they don't use them is a bit narrow minded.

I never use warhammers, but seeing enemies running at me armed with them is realistic and fun.
Variety of weapons an armor is not just for the sake of the player, it also helps to make the world around you more immersive. Thats why there are the basicaly useless iron weapons, and fur armors.
Otherwise we'd have a game were every one wears daedric and nothing else (and as we know from Oblivion bandits, this is VERY VERY BAD. )

Yeah, except I didn't say that. I'd love to see a full spectrum of weaponry, but not at the expense of it being poorly implemented.

The reasons they've given for excluding some weapons were good enough reasons that I don't want any extra weapons if it's going to detract from what they've got planned for the combat system.
If they have time and can make them on par with other weapons animation and balance wise before 11/11/11, that's nice. If not, I don't care all that much.

Crossbows. No - as they dont add a great deal to the fuctionality of bows, but need a whole new set of animations, and trajectory.

Spears. Maybe. This would offer a different combat playstyle, but might take a bit of work to get them up and running. I'd like to see them, but understand why they are not included.

Throwing Knives. Maybe. This offers something a little different to bows, in that you dont need to carry a weapon to have a ranged option, but again new animations would need to be added. Does the combat flexibility justify that?

No to crossbows because they can't really be reloaded within a reasonable amount of time for fights in TES and it has already been said that Skyrim is low tech because the nords don't grasp mechanical things and even magic is a rare thing to see in Skyrim.

No to Spears because in their original incarnation they are overpowered and can be used to constantly damage people while keeping them at a safe range.

Yes to throwing knives. I won't be using them but they seem acceptable.

actually that was the case in morrowind for sure , but they have already said that backpeddling or backtracking or what you want to call it wont be as fast as moving forward.

and yes it was kinda silly since to really strike with your spear you need to put your weight into the thrust , which you can't do while running backwards.

could work if it did like 0.1x the damage of a normal blow.

Crossbows. No. Too slow to load and hasn't really much room for improvement through skill and perks.
Spears. No. Not effective in one on one combat, easily broken (durability wise).
Throwing knives. No. Weak, inaccurate, bad weight/effectiveness ratio.
The general uselessness of these weapons make them difficult to implement in a meaningful way and BGS time can be better spent on improving the existing weapons.

I voted not sure because there wasn't a don't care option. i don't much care either way whether any of those weapons are in game or not. I don't have a strong opinion on the matter. I guess I'm just happy enough with the weapons we already have.

I voted no to crossbows and spears, mostly because I do not like them. I tend to play as a stealth/magic character, and while Marksman is a significant skill of mine, I found in MW I preferred to use the bow in comparison to the crossbow.

As for other weaponry, I'll use a blade if necessary (although I do have a short blade preference) and spears never really fitted in with the way I played, or will play.

Throwing knives however, are pretty damn awesome. And I wish I had have used them more during MW.

I was unsure about crossbows as I never really used them in MW.

That said I think a powerful single shot weapon would be great to fire off quickly at a dragon before wading in with your claymore

definite yes for spears but they're confirmed as out (at least in the traditional sense of spears) they might add it in with a DLC tho

Thorwing stuff could be the solution to my single shot weapon thing (as could scrolls really) but most thrown weapons aren't that powerful except maybe throwing spears (my biggest want so far)

It would be nice if stealth oriented players had a bit more options than a bow and a dagger (wich was rather useless in earlier TES games).

Crossbows should definitely make a return for the sake of variety, spears should too even tho I rarely used them in Morrowind. Finally, throwing knives should also return because hey,we like stealth, right!?

So yes to all of the above. Sure the game is improving in almost all areas but would it really be bad to give players a bit more choices/variety in an RPG game!? Players who don't like crossbows/spears/throwing knives won't use them. Players who do will use them. Win-win. No crossbows/ spears/throwing knives, well it's rather obvious-stealth based players lose.

I said yes to all simply because I am for all the new stuff we can get. All three of those weapons are great and I am sure that I would use them a couple times at some point, between the many characters I will create.

Throwing Knives yeh. If youre indoors and need to make a short-range stealth kill and you cant sneak for a backstab... it doesnt make sense to use a bow.

I always thought throwing spears were... lame. Its really more of a Strength related thing anyway, not so much Agility.

Dont care one way or another about crossbows, but if they were implemented they should be high(instakill) damage with a LONG reload time so you can really only use them to start a fight and not use during. Besides, Strength again.

So... Knives for Agile theives/assassins. Spears and Crossbows for Strong warriors so they have a ranged option.

Spears are easy to balance, all you need is to give weapons proper hit detection and make spears basicaly useless once in close range. That way if a sword and sheild user gets up in a spear users face, they can wack away at them while the spear user is unable to bring the full force of his spear on them.

Saying a weapon is unbalanced because of its natural traits is silly, in warfare weapons are not made to be 'balanced' they are designed to be as deadly and efficient as possible.

So they way I see it is spears have the advantage of reach but the drawback of versatility, as up close they become less effective.

Uh... Are you sure you're thinking of spears?

I hope we will be able to use our arrows several times now before they are rendered unusable. It would also be neat if we had the option of repairing our arrows. Higher the repair/armorer skill higher the chance you will be able to repair it,otherwise it will break.

Well lets just replace the weapons you like with the weapons already mentioned in this thread.

Then you would care.

To be fair the OP really should say "Throwing spears" or even better, "Javelins". Because a "Spear" is a 2handed melee weapon.

agreed! should be relatively easy to implement too I would think. Trigger + A or B to throw it, does same damage as if you hit it with a melee attack. if its a blade weapon it burdens the target with its weight. hardest part would be additional animations.
