Making Daggerfall Portable?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:08 am

Hi guys.

I'm trying to get Daggerfall to install to my flash drive so that I can play it on any computer without an installation. By substituting the correct file paths to work with how the game files are arranged on the stick I can get it to begin the installation.

However, I have two questions: First and foremost, is there a way I can change the installation path to F: (E: on some computers) so it installs there? It always demands a C: path. I don't understand if it literally means the actual computer's C: drive, or if it means the virtual C:, which would be F: like I want? The reason I don't just test it is because I already have it installed with the C:\Dagger file path on my home computer's hard drive and don't want to overwrite that.

I'm using DOSBox portable (latest version) while installing because to use the game away from home I'd need to have a portable DOSBox anyway.

As for the less important question, I was wondering, since the point of making the "Huge" install is to allow less CD accesses, wouldn't it be suffice to use Minimum or even Medium while installing it on a flash drive? Whether pretending to be a game CD or a hard drive, the flash drive will have to be accessed since it holds all the files, so can't I just save some space and use a minimal 37mb install anyway? If it still needs "Huge" then alright, but if not I figured I'd save some space.

I'd appreciate any guidance, thanks.

Daggerfall installs to whatever directory you assign in dosbox, so though it read C:\dagger\ yif you assigned C: as F:\games\ (mount C F:\games) it will install to F:\games\dagger

unless you install as huge then copy the other file, you will need the CD in whatever computer you plug the flash drive into...

one other thing, in the z.cfg file (which you must edit to point to the daggerfall directory to run without CD, it also has the game directory so it knows where to lookf or game files) you will have to edit depending on the computer. On some computers your flash drive might be drive G: , on others it will be drive J: or whatever. each time you plug into a different computer you'll have ot do a quick notepad edit to fix up that file.

Hey, thanks for the speedy info, especially in a less traveled forum! :)

I guess I'll go with Huge then. I have space to spare, but always try to save what I can. Thanks for pointing out the z.cfg bit also.

Cheers

Me again. I got the game running off the flash drive, many thanks, but about the z.cfg editing you mentioned. Well I figured I'd pre-edit it before going to bed to set up for the computer I plan to use it with tomorrow. That computer recognizes flash drives as E: whereas my home computer recognizes them as F:.

Well, the z.cfg file is as follows:

type dfall_huge
path c:\dagger\arena2\
pathcd d:\dagger\arena2\
fadecolor 0
mapfile d
rendergame 1
user 1
startMap 179
region 17
helmet 0
maxSpeed 200
controls betaplyr.dat
maps mapsave.sav

I thought I'd be able to figure this out, but if you read this thread again, could you clarify what I need to edit? That is the z.cfg while using my home computer, so I was expecting something referencing F: but I see none. What would I need to edit here so that it could run under an E: drive?

Or did you mean something else entirely, like the commands you have to enter into DOSBox before it will start again? Specifying E: in those?

Thanks again.

oh, wait. I just looked at mine. No you dont need to worry assign the drives there, it must use the dosbox mounting settings too (like the install)

but you do need to change the

pathcd d:\dagger\arena2\
to
pathcd c:\dagger\arena2\

which you shoul;d have done if you followed the install instruction in the pinned threads.
