Security Backstory Question

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:47 am

I was reading through the back story on the official site for both the Security and Resistance and found a couple of lines between the description of the two sides that seem to conflict. The Security description states: "Most Security personnel have volunteered because they're convinced that for the Ark to survive it must have peaceful order and conserve its remaining resources. And the extra water ration comes in useful too.".

When you look at the Resistance description, it states: "Are the Ark's Founders really doing all they can to re-establish contact with the outside world? Why are only the Guests on rationed water? If their work keeps the Ark afloat, why are they second class citizens?"

So does this mean that since the the Security force is on rationed water, which only Guests are on, is the security force composed of "Guests" to the ark and not of Ark natives and their descendants? I was under the impression it was natives to the ark on one side vs refugees on the other side.

Most likely it is a simple plot hole, as I am under the impression that the Security forces are Ark 'natives.'

I think this implies that the security has more water than they need ("extra water ration")while the "Guests" only have what is given to them.

Considering the 5,000 original Founders consist of non-military personnel, and the original Security forces were simply their bodyguards, it is reasonable to assume some part of the current Security force is made up of refugees who believe that working for the Founders will improve the circumstances of themselves and their family.

I would agree with you on this, but two things stuck out for me on this. I couldn't see having some security on water rations and some not, depending on their ancestory. I also couldn't see the Founders giving heavy weapons to refugees since it would give incentive to join security simply to turn your weapons on the Founders. I was thinking plot hole like the first poster, but I didn't want to claim it was one if I was missing an important detail to the back story.

They're poor people, not like the builders of the Ark. So they get less water, even if they fight for the rich peoples' security

That would make sense, I'll have to read around about that.

This is basicly correct. In the beginning, nobody was running low on ressources and there was no large Resistance group, only some minor criminal activities, I guess.

So recruiting some more people into the Security, to maintain a civilised environment was probably very useful.

As for your first point, I imagine extra rations wouldn't be based on ancestry but loyalty to the Founders. If you swear to serve the Founders loyally and your performance reflects that, you would be rewarded the extra rations and advanced weaponry.

I'm also sure the Founders and the original Security force had some method of screening prospective applicants to make sure they weren't Resistance agents.

Wow i really did not know this, I just assumed that the security was made up of non refuges, but if they are it makes the story even more complex.
