How do you like your polearms?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:02 am

Actually...some polearms do have axe heads, and hammer heads too.
Look them up on the net, there are many types.

Yes, but those are pole-arms, not axes or warhammers.

As for polearms being throwable, that's not what you do with a halberd or bardiche hehe.

I'd like to think that a mad drunk nord would throw anything he/she could lift off the ground

Seriously. One-handed, throwable spears.

This is still a thing that can happen.

Certain types of war axes and war hammers had spikes on them too.

I get the feeling that "polearms" in the diagram from the magazine refers to two-handed warhammers and axes.... Is there reason to think otherwise?

I imagine polearms to be weapons longer than a person is tall, meant primarily to fight in ranks primarily as an anti-cavalry weapon. what the it had at the end be it axe blades, hammer heads or odd shaped blades like the chinese Ji would be irrelevant for the purposes of whether its a polearm or not. The length would make it too unwieldly for anything expect thrusting or using the haft for blocking.

2 handed weapons would be much shorter, short enough to be effectively used in swinging and slashing strokes

Technically speaking, a polearm is just a pole with some kind of thing that hurts people on the end. There is a definite difference in grip between pole-arms and staves and other two handed weapons like a two-handed sword.

martial art isnt different from medieval. and honestly- the best system would be to change animations as you level/get perks

level 1 (1 to 24 or first spear perk) spear is held and player stabs in an inefficient way

level 2 (25 to 49 or second perk) player thrusts and holds the spear efficiently .

level 3- (50-74 or third perk) player uses his spears like a hoplite and glaives/halberds like a samurai

level 4- (75-99 or fourth perk) player uses his polearms like level 3 only with a little more skill shown

level 5 (100 or perk) Hollywood kong fu movie level of awesomeness

It would be AMAZING if they implemented something like this, not just for polearms but for all weapon skills so you could see your character become a weapon master and general total badass at his chosen weapon skill. it'd be a great incentive to totally master a skill rather than just get good enough to be effective at fighting. ]]

alas i think it would require more animations than we could practically expect.

In terms of specific pole-arms, the atgeir would be pretty cool. It's essentially just a single-bladed sword on a stick, as demonstrated http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Gunnar_at_Rang%C3%A1.jpg by legendary Icelandic chieftain Gunnar Hámundarson.

How about "two handed warhammers and axes aren't pole-arms"?

Fair enough, but the question is whether PC Gamer was using "polearms" along those lines.

It does fit with Todd's comment that "spears in the classic sense" aren't in the game, but I still get the feeling that these "polearms" will behave pretty much like two-handed axes.
