Sleep cycles

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:09 am

Before electric lights were invented, people used to sleep twice a night as in sleeping from an hour after sunset to midnight then doing some chores and other stuff like meeting with friends for maybe three hours and then sleeping till sunrise. This happened especially in the wintertime. I believe that Skyrim would feel more alive at night if this was added to the game.

It would also fit nicely to the world as Skyrim is in the North, hence shorter days and longer nights. Also, from what we have heard from the new AI it shouldn't be to hard to implement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segmented_sleep

I'm not saying every NPC should do it, but the ones whose lifestyle it would fit.
Imagine spending a few days spying on NPCs to learn his habits before you rob his house empty OR risk him waking up and causing you to take measures. Run if he didn't see you. Talk your way out if you can. Kill him if you feel like it.

Anyone else hoping to see this in Skyrim?

Well you learn something new every day :) I don't know as to whether it will be in though, although it would be interesting to see.

Segmented sleep is a great idea and would be simple to add to the NPC schedules, and dawn at 9-10am and dusk at 4-5pm would add to the immersion of shorter days in the Northern regions.

Hmmm it's an interesting concept, however I don't really care if it's in there or not, still going to be a great game.

I didn't know that!

I really don't care if it is implemented into the game or not. It won't make a difference either way.

Well even if it doesnt get added, Id hold onto the idea since it seems to be (relative) easy to add as a mod. I certainly wouldnt want to be the one to have to go in and muck with every NPCs schedule though.

Well, I can't really say yes or no to this. You bring up a good point.... my only thing is this: Certain quests may require you do things in secret at night, and if people sleep were segmented, this would be hard to accomplish. Also I love stealing and such, and mostly plan this at night. Also would turn out to be more difficult, and shorter time spans to act.

I sleep when I want to sleep.

Nothing odd about that.

I'm sure some NPCs will have different sleep cycles, but its not really anything that interesting but be a nice touch. I doubt anyone would notice it though.

I think sleep scheduals should be different for all NPC's, but I like this idea NPC's could go home and nap in the evening then later in the night they would wake up and go to the tavern.

Interesting bit of trivia there...

Seems pointless, though.

...and this pretty much sums up said trivia's relevance to the game. Definitive "meh, whatever."

I didn't think of that before. You bring up some good points. I play as a thief/assassin type, so I do most of my activities during the night. Having the NPC's on unpredictable schedules could prove to be troublesome.

Also, if someone is playing as a vampire, it may be difficult to find someone to bite into at night.....

NPCs should sleep 20 hours per day and hibernate whole winter.

I agree with the sleep cycles. Also, night life might be alright, but this topic is not really about that. Here is a thread all about night life in skyrim: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1166042-nightlife/

But it would be a good thing that everything doesn't go as planned, much more interesting that there is always a risk that the owner wakes up and starts questioning the reason why you are in his house in the middle of the night. Then you could talk your way out of the situation or even kill him, if it comes to that.

True..... It just doesn't make the job any easier. I must agree though, that it would be more interesting. I like your choices. My character would probably go with the latter. :chaos:
