Afraid to buy game

I'm not terribly worried about bugs. The game is looking great so far, Bethesda will patch up the big ones that might be found after release, and modders will probably fix up even more after that, if need be (much like Oblivion; I can't speak for Fallout 3; I haven't played it since before Broken Steel came out, so I'm not up-to-date with them odding scene there).

I've never really had any issues on my 360. That said, I got the GOTY edition of Oblivion from my Cuz. He had the first version, so he didn't want two disks. :P And then with Fallout 3, I got that GOTY edition from a friend of mine. Those ran fine with the fixes they had. I did have one issue, but it was entirely my fault. It evolved vampires, and the mages quest, the thieves guild was mixed in there, and I had all ready finished the main quest...oh ya, the DarkBrotherhood was a problem starter as well. Ya know, its hard to find daedric hearts after finishing the main quest...

Anyway, the only real game I got that wasn't GOTY was NV. I got it...just after the first patch I think. It worked fine for me. No real issues. To be honest, the GOTY edition for Oblivion freezes up more often than NV does. NV only really freezes up when I've been playing to long.

I'm gonna get Skyrim, if not on 11-11-11, the weekend after. You know its going to be buggy as hell, TES is in the title. :P But the support has gotten better for these things in my opinion. The game's going to at least be somewhat playable, and then the patches will come to make everything all better. Patching is a relativly new thing, and Oblivion came out with the new generation of consoles. Patches really weren't used that much before in the old generation. At least not automatic free ones. So we should be happy Skyrim's patches will be free, instead of having us go out and buy another disk that has a mix of dlc and patches.

I am a little worried but that is due to the newer engine. I was bummed with Oblivion. Broken Quest lines really irritate me the most. I feel that any and all quests should be fixed before release. Don't want to pay 60 dollars for a beta. That said this IS a Bethesda game and they are one of a kind. Fallout 3 was definately an improvement with the knowledge base and the QA was excellent. New Vegas is garbage (but that is most obsidian games). Broken game on day 1. 60 dollar paperweight and still is.

When it comes down to it, I believe the folks at Bethesda know what they're doing. I understand they're using a new engine for the game, which should make things better overall, but glitches are always a given. Even if glitches appear, it wont be long before they deploy a patch! Plus with a release date of 11-11-11, they had better be on they're "A" game! If they miss that date, they have no other date that will be such an interesting release. (Think about it... all 1's.)

All said, I think this will be an epic game, and i'm watching closely! I know Bethesda wont let us down!

A TES game with bugs? I don't think I'd like it any other way.

Meh. On one hand, bugs are evil. On the other, I've never seen any game come close to the scope of The Elder Scrolls games.

Not bad for a game reportedly made with runny ink on weathered parchment.

Xbox 360. The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion. I get the fact that some people complete the game fast and some never have a problem. When I buy a game I play it till its complete. Between work and 2 kids I get up early on the weekends and stay up late whenever I can just to play.... I've had this game since it came out and was just about to complete the main quest. It's like having six but never get to climix... To the people that say there have been patches or will be fixed by a patch see the forum for the game. You will see that there was never a fix and many people had the same problems. And I do save all the time. I have a save right before the problem occured but just bugs out anyway during game play. From what I've read some people had some luck fixing the problem on the PC version but Bethesda gave up for the Xbox. I hope the new engine helps.. Maybe I'll just wait awhile for you guys to go thru it before lay out the spetims. And mabybe just get the PC version where I have more control.

Are you referring to the A-bomb glitch where animations start freezing up the game?
If so, apparently BGS said they tried fixing it but couldn't find a way and now they're no longer supporting the game (making anymore patches or anything for it). Ironic that the PC community found a remedy/ fix for it. Hopefully BGS dev personnel have learned from that and improved their skills by now if not hired some new devs that know better how fix their software.

Oblivion had fewer bugs than Morrowind which had fewer bugs than Daggerfall.. so they have been getting better :)

One of these days they'll make a game where they fix ALL the bugs and have time to actually balance the gameplay.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I'm afraid to but the game because of all the unresolved bugs with Elder Scrolls. I love the game and spent alot of time just getting my character just right and now I'm getting problems with game play. I can't get involved with a game that crashes and noone can fix it. What do you guys think?

They are YOUR bugs.
I have played for years and the games play just fine.
I seriously suggest that if troubleshooting PC games problems is not your thing then get the console version of the game.
Computers are very frustrating at the best of times.
Playing the games as provided by Bethesda works for me out of the box and the few quests that have a conflict are usually fixed in the first upgrade.
If you get a console it'll work just fine.

I didn't have many problems with Morrowind, but I have had problems with Oblivion. I played Oblivion for many hours despite some annoying bugs and the low graphics my older computer produced. I think that says a lot about the games value in my opinion.

I don't care if it is bugged...no game is 100% perfect. That is why I SAVE OFTEN. I do about 4 saves each game, then I resave over those saves over and over again. It works quite well!

If anything they are just as glitchy on consoles. Fallout 3 had the least amount of glitches and no game breaking ones on my console. Oblivion had major game breaking glitches day one on my console. Freezing or crashing I can deal with but broken questlines are unacceptable. At least the crafty PC user can fix most broken quests. Console folks are pretty much screwed until or IF a patch comes out.

I had the Nvidia VATS bug with Fallout 3 that made the game unplayable as soon as I left the vault, until it was patched. That was my first Bethesda game. NV I completed without a patch, but a desired quest path was bugged so I had to take a different route, fixed after some patching. I think I will wait until after the first major patch or 2 if I buy Skyrim at all.

Oblivion buggy? The only reason it was buggy is because you thought it was necessary to drag 10 bodies into a doorway and close the door.

No? Just me?

Just but it dude, don't worry.

In my experience i have had no problems with Oblivion. Its crashed maybe 5 times on my 360 in 500+ hours. Fallout 3 has never crashed.

I think that a lot of the people who are saying they haven't had problems either played on a VERY patched version of the PC game, or simply aren't aware that they've encountered bugs. If anyone on this entire board actually played the game through without encountering significant bugs and glitches, I'd kiss your ass and you could bring three people to watch.

Here's one example. This is the bug list for http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Shivering:The_Coming_Storm#Bugs.

Note that in those entries there are several glitches that have been patched with "The Unofficial Oblivion Patch."

That patch was user made. It is NOT available to PS3 or 360 users.

Just because you're not conscious of a bug when you step on it doesn't mean it isn't there. Those of us that are interested in all the quests and that try to figure out how the formula and such works notice them, and they're pretty damned constant - and often very significant.

If a user goes to the museum of oddities but doesn't realize the shopkeeper is dead when she's supposed to be there, or that they're only supposed to get one pair of pants and can't figure out why no one will take any of them, I can easily see someone chalking that up to "Well, I guess that's how it's supposed to work" instead of correctly attributing it to a flaw in the program.

This is FAR from the most bugged quest in the game. These items (each with their own bug section) are also FAR from the most bugged items in the game.

For a real kick, take a look at the bug list for http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Vampire_Cure#Bugs.

Seriously. Look at it. Imagine you're on a 360 or PS3 without any options to enter the console and correct these issues, but you've started the quest. If you do not complete the quest once it is started, your character is PERMANENTLY a vampire.

Again, while this is one of the buggier quests in the game, it is far from the buggiest. It's up there, but it ain't the worst.

Anyone that says they've gone through this game without encountering bugs and glitches is simply unaware of them. Check any quest in the game on that site. Each and every quest in the game has a bug list, and the vast majority of those bugs are absolutely unpatched, and with no way for a 360 or PS3 user to correct them.

In almost any game, their will be bugs. Bugs could be on the initial launch of Skyrim, or later on when a patch is released. Almost any game still has bugs, but most of them are minor and we do not notice it.

I have always been satisfied with Betheseda Softworks and all of their games. So no doubt I will be pre-ordering this game once available.

There are bugs in most games that are released. TES has had their fair share of bugs, but I doubt that it will be anything overly serious. TES is Bethesda's best game after all (IMO) and they are going to spend a lot of time making sure to have most everything worked out.

Bethesda is, indeed, known for buggy games. My beloved Morrowind still crashes occasionally to this day. However, their games have become progressively more polished--Fallout 3 was pretty stable for me. Also, Bethesda is an A-list developer now and should have the resources to iron out most bugs before release.

Also bear in mind that I don't think anyone here expects an open world game of this scope to be made perfectly bug free. It shouldn't have as many bugs as it did, but no one realistically expects a bug free game of this type the first time around.

The part that I think most are concerned with is that the last time Bethesda released a patch for the game was when the GotY came out. In that patch, they addressed the issue of not being able to see the Anvil chapel from outside of town since it's the tallest building in town. This bug, they chose to correct. You can now see the chapel of Anvil from outside of Anvil.

As though most users would notice or even be aware you're supposed to be able to see it because it's so tall... This... They fix.

But the guy who sells you your house in Skingrad can still fall off a cliff and die. Vampire Cure still doesn't function. The chick who gives you The Coming Storm quest in SI can still be dead right from the beginning because she's fallen off her front porch. There are still a ton of inventory items that get stuck in the inventory and that don't work properly.

But man, you sure can see that chapel.

That was 2007. The game is still bugged. They haven't patched it for 360 or PS3 users since then.

It'd be one thing if they hadn't simply abandoned those users with all those bugs. If they had continued to patch the game, that would probably be fine. They didn't however. They simply left those users hanging - and their priority was trivial stuff like seeing the chapel from outside the city because it's so tall instead of correcting some serious issues in the game itself. I think that's why 360 and PS3 users should be concerned. Had Bethesda made even a token effort to support these customers, I think this thread wouldn't be here. But they didn't. They pretty much told those customers to go screw themselves.

So when those same users are concerned about the next game... "Gee, I can't imagine why."
