Keys are always worth learning, I need to do it myself, I just never get round to practicing. I recommend the violin, but get lessons if you do, because I find it terribly hard to motivate yourself early doors. I imagine cello is the same, but I've always wanted to play that too.

And I think you should rethink the whole guitar situation, guitars are incredibly fun to play, just because a lot of people play them, doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.

Somebody mentioned sitars earlier, and I'd say go for it if you can. Then again, I pretty much want to learn every instrument going.

Just as a side, you might want to consider getting a ukulele (you can buy them here from like ￡20) and then getting a keyboard/piano later :shrug:

Have you considered the bass? Guitar players are a dime a dozen. A good solid simple bass is a requisite for any band...and one of the primary functions of the bass is to stay tight with the drums, which you already have experience with.
Bass doesn't have to be fancy, just right and tight...then you eventually learn fancy from a solid foundation.

[edit] Just saw Solid_Moose post...and yours Thunder2....Yes, bass is the instrument for you. It's easier to learn than most anything else mentioned here.
Another thing is if you're really good at banjo, you're almost guaranteed a paying gig with a good bluegrass band....

I always wanted to play an instrument (well I had to play the flute in 5th and 6th grade but I didn't find it that interesting

)...however I always liked playing the piano and the guitar (even though I don't know how to play them :sadvaultboy: ). Does anybody know good video tutorials on either?

Harmonica is really easy to learn. I've only played for about a year and I can impress even the most uptight harmonica lover. Plus it's really small.

So I have known how to play drums since I was 13 or so, got decent at it but now find it repetitive. I'm looking for a new instrument to play, and not guitar. Nearly all my musician friends play guitar.

I was thinking something a bit different. Like the banjo. The banjo, so I am told, is actually really hard to play. I'm not interested in a teacher (I'm not sure where I would find someone to teach banjo anyway).

I was possibly thinking of Piano, however this option is more pricey. I could always resort to electric piano, but that wouldn't feel legit.

Another one is vocals. Though I can't imagine myself singing really, I would like to give it a try. ( I am also not clear as to whether singing is completely based upon the vocals you were born with, or if they can be "trained" and tuned through practice )

Short, simple thread. I was simply looking if anyone had experience with any of the above instruments, and could give me some input as to how challenging they are, how long it takes to get decent with it, and how pricey it is.

If you have some alternatives for me to consider, please do tell! I'm looking for something that isn't really average.

Get a six string banjo, All the enjoyment of the twang, with the ease of playing it like a guitar and being able to play any guitar song on your banjo through tab.

Six string banjos are neat....I picked one up in the music store once, and it was fun to rip some blues licks off on it. I'd definitely like to own one to play the blues and ragtime sounding stuff on it with a flat pick... 5 string claw hammer style with finger picks is another animal altogether.

The best part is that you can get a decent one for only 280.00 bucks at Guitar Center. Its the one I own. Travis picking and hybrid picing sound great on it. You haven't heard New Wave until you cover some Big Country or The Church on a Zither banjo.

Banjo can be a lot of fun. I bought one after getting into http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abQRt6p8T7g a while back (you've never seen anyone rock out on a banjo like Scott Avett). I picked it up pretty quick, but I have a background playing guitar/bass/mandolin, so that helps.
