A poll for a newbie trying to figure out who to listen to

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:20 am

hi everybody. I don't ask this question because i want to ruffle any feathers. I just want to get the general opinion on who I should consider the authority on lore. This isn't meant to insult anybody ok? And you can respond anonymously if you want.

I started playing elder scrolls after another member of this forum turned me on to the games and have been lurking for awhile. I finally got me a login and thought I would just straight out ask for you alls opinion. Like I said I hope that this doesn't hurt anybody's feelins ok? I'm just looking for the consensus. Thanks for responding. I love this game and reading what everybody writes. There is so much to learn about all of this that I cant hardly believe that this all comes from a video game. Thank you guys.

Oh yeah I didn't put MK as a choice because he would dominate. I already figured that one out. If I left anybody else out please dont be mad ok? I haven't been here long enough to read everybody.

oh and please dont vote for yourself ok?

I'll take Albides for the first, Brian S for the second.

You're missing a very knowledgeable name, but he's not on these forums anymore.

I'd put all of them as the hierarchs of this forum. They're all very esteemed here.

They all pretty much know, and will respond with varying levels of snark depending on how stupid the question is.

But, yeah, they're all chill.

All of the patriarchs are pretty knowledgeable and are usually very helpful when asked. Just ask around a bit and you'll get the feel for the forums and who to trust.

May I mention that if you're interested on learning about the ES universe that you may want to start http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=195079.

And welcome to the forums. :)

We've all been wandering around in circles long enough that we've reached consensus on most things, so it doesn't really matter who you ask you're going to get the same answer just with differing degrees of eloquence...

Though I guess we all have our topical specialties. For instance Proweler is probably the best person to go to about Argonian mating habits, while paws is much more the authority on why the Mnemoli harbor resentment to Azura. Albides knows the most about practical things, such as the square footage of Daggerfall and it's sewer systems and The Word Merchant, though he professes to follow Julianos, really fills his post with pro-Dagoth propaganda. Nalion is the de facto head of all things dealing with circles and Wierd is MIA, while Brian S knows the most about the political systems of the Redguards in Rihad that walk around naked. Me, well, I know everything, but mostly concerning the metaphysical relations between clouds and the Nine Divines...

Wow, where did this poll come from?

On the one hand, I am honored to have been placed in such fine company. Thank you, muthsera Godguiser, for I am always at your service.

On the other hand, I must profess that questions such as this have a tendency to alienate those not listed, but since Godguiser made apologetic and curative statements ahead of time, I cannot admonish further.

Luagar2 is correct; we each have our own specialties, I suppose, although where he gets this pro-Dagoth verbal-fecal dribbling, I have no idea. :slap:

Again, I am honored for having been considered and am most interested in the results. I suppose "good luck" to each of the enumerated scholars is in order. May JHUNAL illuminate your searches, for I remain...honored, humbled, and [ OBSCURED TO MORTALS ].

Yours in the Scrolls,

___The Word Merchant of Julianos

ps: And to you, muthsera Godguiser, you may always come to me (or any of us, I would assume) for assistance. Each of us spent a great deal of time seeking the succor of others concerning different facets of lore. We did not get to the point where we are enumerated in polls through self-education alone. Again, thank you, and welcome to the Lore Forums, my friend. ___TWM

Word Merchant. He/she lives into the role, kinda. And seems to know everything about almost everything

EDIT: Next time, put Harido Galosh Jam (sp?) on the list, he/she replies to everything, and I haven't seen someone disagree more than a few times.

I didn't expect to get this many responses. I hope everyone participates. I'm glad nobody is taking this the wrong way either. I had it in my head how each of them fit into the big picture. And I agree that each one of them have one thing in particular that they do better than any of the others. I love how everybody waits for Prowler to answer before they decide. And I love how Word merchant does everything in character. All in all everybody puts in a little spice to the board which is really cool. I'm trying to figure out what my special something should be without begin generic or ripping somebody else off. Oh and thanks word merchant for telling me I can ask for help. That means a lot coming from you. I hope everybody keeps taking the poll!

Oh and thank you too Loreseeker for telling me welcome to the forums! One more thing I forgot to mention. I started wondering about which guys knew more when word merchant said that he hated to disagree with Nalion and did it like he was not supposed to. That was when I was wondering if there is a hierarchy or something.

It's everywhere, just in that post alone you cryptically managed to point out how you believe the new TES novel's flying city is a construct of Dagoth's for his second coming. You do hide it well though...

Lies, I am a self-made man. I was even born in a log-cabin. B)

Well, the only person that has a discernible formula is TWM, so as long as you don't start going on about Julianos and calling people muthsera you should be fine (unless you decide to be a Khajiit, that's been done before).

Thank you for your kind words, my friend. I am humbled and appreciative.

Word Merchant. He/she lives into the role, kinda. And seems to know everything about almost everything

Likewise, thank you for your kind words, my friend. I am humbled and appreciative of the both of you. May JHUNAL illuminate your searches.

And I love how Word merchant does everything in character.

Muthsera Godguiser, it truly makes any undertakings that much more fulfilling when every so often one receives such compliments as you have just given. I do enjoy posting "in character", for I feel it is a pseudo-RPing that I can do wherever I am, and I am glad that my perspective has increased the enjoyment of someone else.

Oh and thanks word merchant for telling me I can ask for help. That means a lot coming from you.

Thank you for your kind words. I, however, have never placed myself (in my mind) on the level of many of the others with whom you have placed me categorically. I am honored to occupy a like eschelon, whether justly or prematurely.

I started wondering about which guys knew more when word merchant said that he hated to disagree with Nalion and did it like he was not supposed to. That was when I was wondering if there is a hierarchy or something.

Again, muthsera, I have examined the in-depth productions of those like Nalion and been awed by their intricacy and thoroughness. No, we have no real "hierarchy", only a system of deference that vaguely resembles a meritocracy of competence, as it were, and many of those you have listed have assumed their lofty positions of esteem via consistent proliferation of both established lore in response to inquiries and progressive development and dissemination of theories extrapolated from the "official" canon which fill in the voids left by real world constraints on time and space for and in the game.

No, there is no hierarchy, only the good words that come from good works. I hope that this helps.

It's everywhere, just in that post alone you cryptically managed to point out how you believe the new TES novel's flying city is a construct of Dagoth's for his second coming. You do hide it well though...

Then stop looking up my kilt, you heathen! :hubbahubba:

Lies, I am a self-made man. I was even born in a log-cabin. B)

Your own egg-universe may have been the source of your biogenesis, my friend, but your hands were burnt black from screwing up the scrambling thereof....which took place in a Waffle House, not a log cabin. (Check, please! :bolt:)

Well, the only person that has a discernible formula is TWM, so as long as you don't start going on about Julianos and calling people muthsera you should be fine (unless you decide to be a Khajiit, that's been done before).

Yeah, that formulae has been taken, although I must disagree with you on whether I am the only one with a discernible formula. On the contrary, Brian S has a unique modus operendi in that he skulks around smelling like crab and bi*ching about the sour Graqes of (JHUNAL's) Wrath that beats down upon him and his little sidekick, the ultimate partner in crime, Wierd.

Those two have it hinged on their Hermaeus Mora fetish to the point that they couldn't tell the truth from fiction due to their heads being so conveniently situated up their star-wounds. The only Lie Rock in their 9th aperatures is the Lie of Mora, which is to say sushi rolls from the Great Forrester Goat God of foul-smelling dewey decimal abominations.

But yeah, avoid those, muthsera Godguiser, and you should be fine. :goodjob:

Until then, I remain....

Yours in the Scrolls (and not in the star-wounds of Mora),

lolwut no Adanorcil?

the people listed are pretty damn knowledgeable, but i really dont think there is such a thing as one dominating authority whose voice goes over that of the others. they will all provide you with the 'right' answer when one exists and discuss amongst themselves when one does not.

as for special things, you really dont need one. just learn your lore and start posting in threads.

Popularity threads are not a good idea. So I will be totally unpopular and close this poll.
