Imperials hated?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:04 am

Hey guys. I am just wondering, are the Imperials hated in Tamriel?
Some people keep telling me this, however they don't provide any source, and I just want to read and learn it myself.

So, is there any evidence about this? Are the imperials hated, if so, can you point me in the right direction to gather said evidence?

Thanks.

If it is relevent or not, am currently playing through Morrowind again and its littered throughout the game that the people of Morrowind don't really like any outsiders including Dunmer not born there; perhaps this part of what you have heard?

Not exactly, its more of "Down with the Empire" stuff....and Imperials are just not well liked because of the Empire.......however, you do bring up a good point about Morrowind.

You won't get more "down with the Empire" than what Dagoth Ur was planing on doing, so Dunmeri sentiment is important in this regard. Unless the Khajiit have found some workable Numidium parts in the Halls of the Colossus, Morrowind is barometer of Imperial tolerance. If you look at what happened, if it weren't for the Nerevarine, there wouldn't have been a empire to save from Mehrunes Dagon a couple of years later in the first place.

"Welcome, Nerevar. Together we shall speak for the Law and the Land, and shall drive the mongrel dogs of the Empire from Morrowind." - Ur.

Take into account, the Altmer were only taken into the Empire in the first place becuase the Numidium was dropped on their heads, and the Imperial Navy held the way ever after. It's not hard to imagine the collective memories of the Altmer still feel cheated on that one.

The more antiImperialist provinces like Morrowind don't. Although I have a feeling places like Valenwood are indifferent and High Rock may even prefer Imperial rule.

Maybe.

I know about Morrowind, but what about the general populace in Tamriel itself?

Summerset Isle views every ioda of outside control over their homeland as blasphemous and violating. Talos sicced a robot on them. I think we can surmise that Imerial institutions and jurisdiction hasn't penetrated very far inland. High Elves in the provinces often represent part of the Imperial upper class, however.

The Crowns historically resent Imperial rule.

The Imperials annexed the Transniben, and there is a Khajiiti insurgency there. They made areas of Rimmen uninhabitable and outlawed the skooma trade. The trade isn't crucial to Elsweyr, but the cultivation of it is sacred.

High Rock has calmed down since the days of the War of Betony, but it still probably isn't too receptive to Imperial interests.

The Argonians are pretty isolated from it all, as are most of the Bosmer, I'd expect.

Ok, but all I see is some speculation.

Except for Summerset and the Crowns, I don't really see any hard evidence.

Speculation and precedent is all we have until TES 5.

As with the real-life Roman Empire, the Cyrodilic Empire is viewed differently by different factions within the provinces - some hate it, some are very supportive, whereas others are somewhere in the middle. For example, the Hlaalu of Morrowind are generally pro-Imperial whereas the other Houses are indifferent or hostile; there's a similar situation with the Crowns and Forebears in Hammerfell, and I imagine there are similar divisions in the other provinces. Some Elves (especially Altmer and Dunmer) dislike the Imperials because they consider all humans inferior beings, while other people may appreciate the benefits the Empire has brought (e.g. widespread education, legal rights/protection, trade links) but still resent the fact that they're under occupation. The situation is a lot more complicated than 'Imperials are hated in Tamriel'.

Mostly in-game dialogue from Morrowind, and I'm not sure where to go to link you to that.

That is exactly the answer I was looking for!
It makes so much sense

Thank you!

There is a cultural group or political power in nearly every province that hates the empire.

Cyrodiil: The Wild Elves and the Khajiit and Argonians in the Trans-Niben
Morrowind: The Ashlanders, the Telvanni, the Camonna Tong
Skyrim: The glacier tribes
Summerset Isles: Hmm...I'd imagine that many of the wizard-lords are indifferent, possibly hostile
Valenwood: The forest clans
Elsweyr: The northern desert tribes
Black Marsh: Imperial authority here is practically non-existant
Hammerfell: The Crowns, Alik'r nomads
High Rock: Valley clans

I think that is a vast understatement. Paws hit it on the nail. Ocato must be seen as a racial traitor in Isles. The Altmer have the primal desire to "uncoil the dragon." As in, undo mortal existence, and remove the Aedric influence on everything. Though, I think, few openly express this, or even understand it. I would also disagree with pigeonholing the Altmer in the same mindset as the Telvanni.

I'd imagine that being conquered by a nation and a people that impose their culture and religion on their subjects would generate feelings of hatred and anymosity. It does in real life.

Remember too the dialogue snippet of a boycott being led against Imperial goods. The Altmer were unconquerable until Tiber Septim cheated and used the giant robot. They consider themselves the cultural origins of all Tamrielic culture and thus have a chip on their shoulder to prove it. It's an affront to them that the Empire, a lesser nation, conquered them.

I wouldn't call it cheating.....Tiber was just a smart guy :P

People dislike them because they are a dominating force, but like them for being an equalizing force. Everyone is treated under the same law, but that law is made by someone who isn't you.

The Altmer of the Summerset Isles are Xenophobics who have an inherent mistrust for outsiders entering the Isles. They always believed that they were superior to the other races of Tamriel, and so when they were defeated by Tiber Septim the shame was almost unbearable. They mistrust Imperials more than other races but I dont think they hate them.
