Love the addtion of perks, but cant we find another term?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:57 am

In another topic, might be a couch, on 12 February 2011 - 06:02 AM, said:

"so Skyrim's combat skills including perks (which i'm sure Bethsda could have used a better name for since so many people seem to not understand what a perk is) are on par with Morrowind's, and just might be even deeper."

I totally agree - I hate the term "perk" It reminds me of FO, and seems so superficial, when it seems in Skyrim that it will actually be a huge factor in defining your character. Maybe they could use another term like expertise, talent, proficiency, aptitude or competence

Would love to hear others opinions about the use of the word perk to describe such a huge part of defining your character. And would love to hear alternative ideas of what you would call it.

NOTE - This is not a discussion of whether you like perks, but what they should be called in Skyrim.

Storm

Why change the name if that is what they are. People wanted perks like Fallout now that is what we have name and all and now we must live with it...a viking fallout so to speak.

While we're at it, might as well come up with some new names for health, fatigue, and magica cause those terms aren't that unique to TES either.

Because it hurts our feeling... :sadvaultboy:

To the role-playing connoisseur the term perk is mainly used to describe less important, useless and often double edged abilities that just give more character to your character.

In Skyrim I get the impression that the new system is centered around "perks" since you get one every level.
Perks aren't perks when the game revolves around them. Then they're abilities. :P

It is just a name though. It has no effect on the way the game plays, or the immersion of the game, or anything. It is just them not following the norm so far as I can tell and using a term that they have previously used in Fallout which to me seems the biggest issue people take with it. I am still thoroughly dumbfounded by the amount of people that are more or less offended by such a simple phrase.

Rename skills "attributes", and perks "skills". :D

You could call them a talent.

1. A marked innate ability, as for artistic accomplishment. See Synonyms at ability.
2.
a. Natural endowment or ability of a superior quality.
b. A person or group of people having such ability: The company makes good use of its talent.

Talent is naturally given, not earned through work.

Well it depends on how perks are implemented. Maybe if you choose them from the beginning and they develop overtime...it would be called a talent. But if you gain them as you progress...it would be called an ability or a trait or if it's a combat specific attack or defense, a move.

I LOVE the addition of perks I dont care what you call them it is not like it is going to ruin the game for me. I am just glad it is EVERY level like in FO 3 instead of Every OTHER like in vegas. I mean, that like took the fun out of leveling in vegas.

What about "Special Advantages" like in Daggerfall, or simply Advantages?

Love the addition of perks to this new post-apocalyptic game, but can't we find another term? Let's think of something that doesn't remind us of GURPS.
Love these skill things, but they remind me a lot of D&D/etc/etc.

Love the addition of dragons, but can't we find another term? I'm thinking Wingburnies.

The extra little abilities that you got every 25 levels for the skills in Oblivion were referred to both in PR material and in the Construction Set as perks. So perks existed in the Elderscrolls series before Bethesda Game Studios began work on Fallout 3.

I no longer take this forum seriously. The amount of topics that are just mindless complaining and pointless topics asking the devs to include literally everything possible in the game has gone beyond ridiculous. And when all options are exhausted, let's start complaining that the name of something isn't good enough.

If I was a dev for BGS, I'd be so very disheartened by the mass complaining that they get. We're lucky they want to work on this at all.

Sure, we get a few threads that actually promote healthy discussion about how to improve the game, but this is four pages complaining that name of one aspect of the game reminds us too much of Fallout. It just boggles the mind.

Talent/Proficiency > Perk
But that's just me.
Also, perk can be a confusing term since it actually has totally other meaning that people will hardly connect it with something skill related (link http://www.thefreedictionary.com/perk).
Even though it's nothing I will break my head about if it doesn't get changed.

The thing is, whenever someone gives a good change idea, he gets flamed with comments ala 'It was good this way until now so it doesn't have to change.' and similar stuff.

I find it hilarious how many people feel the need to complain about complainers.

The announcement of Skyrim has drawn a bunch of new people, and some older people back to the forums. There's going to be tons of topics because people are excited. Who's to say what topic is good and what topic is bad?

And why should the developers be disheartened? The explosion of activity on these boards, the passionate arguments, and the exploring of every single little detail of what this game could offer just shows how many people love and cherish the games that they make. If anything it's a good thing.

Should be called Dragon Hearts, and they can be gained by levelling up or by eating the heart of a dragon.
