DotA

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:12 pm

I'm starting to play DotA and have gotten a better taste for it. Was wondering if anyone on this forum plays? If so which server and what is your account name?

For those who don't know, DotA is a game within Warcraft 3, a custom map. You play from a birds eye perspective and choose from a range of heroes, each unique and use their own powers. Through quick thinking and gearing right you win.

---
I have been experiencing a bit of slowdown or lag with WC3 (that shouldn't be happening because it never happened in past and it's an 07 laptop and it's specs are more than enough to play the game, this happens with other games and internet too). I'm not sure what the problem is, I've had it for quite some time.

I tried installed WC3 again yesterday, and it told me my CD-key was invalid, and apparently you have to mail them your jewel case with CD-key, and then pay $10 to get a new one. So I bought Starcraft 2. I know, the logic is astounding.

I enjoy playing DotA but I haven't played it in a few months. Pugna is my favorite hero. He's difficult to use because he's extremely squishy, but with practice he can become a very dominant hero mid-game. :P

I'm actually thinking about just waiting for Valve to release DOTA II and buying that before I jump back into the DotA games again, but maybe if I have some free time i'll reinstall Warcraft III on the new computer.

Well then I must ask; is the custom map community good in SC2? All my friends tell me it's nowhere near as good as WC3s was back in the day, but I've gotten mixed results.

I've switched to League of Legends a year ago. Never regretted it. More variety, fun metagame, and a really nice free-2-play model where you can't spent money to automatically get better. Very excited about DOTA2 though. ^_^

League of Legends is awesome. I had way more fun playing it than Heroes of Newerth. They have some really fun heroes too. :)

I've also moved on to league of legends. It's a nice game to keep me satisfied until Valve completes their version. Who knows how long that can take.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBbVqR3Euf4. I've played some great maps for SC2 as well as for WC3. I'm sure that they say SC2 maps aren't as good yet since people are still exploring the editor. They're bound to create some amazing stuff, like that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roIOpHq0vUc map.

So back to DotA, my friends and I were avid players back in the day. But we didn't play in tournaments, since while we were decent, we weren't amazing. I loved using Magnataur and some other initator heroes.

But now I play Heroes of Newerth. I got to admit though, the community is absolutely terrible.

Nah, I play LoL now. It is based on DotA but has evolved to something greater.

I played DotA way back on WC3 but I got bored after a while, and not too long ago I started playing LoL which is really nice but I stopped because of the community.

But now I play Heroes of Newerth. I got to admit though, the community is absolutely terrible.

Exactly, same with LoL, something about DotA makes all people become trolls, seriously.
When I was playing LoL with friends it was fine because we had a semi-normal team but the community of the game is really made up out of 85% trolls and 15% normal people.

I remember one "match" we had a crappy team build so one player afk'ed, one player fed, and we were 3 left to protect all lanes while of course the other team calls us noobs and [censored] because we're losing and the one feeding also doing the same because he wants us to stop defending our lanes so the match will end...

...I just got tired of all that crap and left the game.

Although I am waiting for DotA2 because I love Valve and I like DotA, and because of it being a Valve game I'm sure most of my RL will buy it :P

I didn't think that the LoL community was that bad. I'm currently restricted to the SEA-only version of HoN and our community is absolutely horrible. Trashtalking in different languages seems to be the norm, as well as general disrespect. But I play with friends and such, so that solves the griefers. On my team at least.

One thing I didn't really like about LoL was that some people gain an edge over others, via the rune system (I think?). Customizing your hero (or "champion" for you LoL-ers :P) seems like a good idea, but don't people with lower account levels have lesser stats because of this system? Another thing, players don't have access to all the heroes, right? You have to buy or unlock them if they're not in the weekly rotation pool. I know that would encourage people to try new things, but I don't really like the idea.

Admittedly, I didn't play too much of LoL, just 5 to 10 games, but I'm still generally interested in trying again actually.

Edit: speaking of valve, will they offer us to pay for hats and whatever crap for our DotA2 characters like they do in TF2?

The edge runes gave wasn't too bad as long as a level 1 player didn't play against top tier guys which wouldn't happen anyways, also they tweaked the rune system not too long ago to make it even less 'game-breaking' to have really low levels fight against full rune-equipped guys and they also made them cheaper (In game currency not real cash) due to the changes so its really easy to stock up on them now.

The community was unbearable for me after some point in the game, I played on the EU server (which was crappy, went down each day for at least 4 hours), and it was basically the same experience you have with HoN, trashtalks, trolls and feeders everywhere.

And of course, playing with friends is really nice but my friends stopped playing after a while and I was inclined to leave after them because it was a trollfest without them.

The game itself is really good and pretty balanced considering what it is but with a community like that I just can't think about playing it a second further..

About DotA2, they really haven't released any info about something like that, they didn't release much info at all but its Valve so I'm sure the game will be good and I'm hopeful that they won't have a TF2 style store for the game, although with the amount of cash they're getting for hats in TF2 I think they'll do something in those lines for DotA2 as well.

Honestly, I think all online games do that to people. Where in real life face-to-face you would say gg, when people are behind a computer screen they seem to want to call others out and tell them they are n00bs and whatnot. I never did understand why.

That's just the internet for you. Once moderation falls...
Anyway, you'd just have to know when to play. Don't play in the afternoon on a Saturday server-time, then you should have much less kiddies and trolls. ^_^

Because anonymity makes people feel "safe" with trashing others.

Of course, trolls are everywhere, I'm also pretty immune to trolling myself but this game has gotten borderline unplayable from all the trolls and kiddies :meh:

Also, I played each day multiple times at different hours and I didn't feel much of a difference troll-wise, I don't mind though I had a good time playing with friends and I played enough of the game to last me a while :P

Eh, I don't care. At all. If people start mocking and can play, I just don't care, and if they can't and still do this, I just laugh. As I always say, once you realise that half of the people on this planet are not that smart, you get along muuuch better in life. ^_^

The biggest issue with LoL, that doesn't happen nearly as often in Dota, is that its much, much harder to carry a team by yourself. If even 1 person on your team is terrible, it can bring down the entire team with them, whereas in Dota, a single Balanar, Banehollow, Axe, Yunero, or whatever can carry an entire team just by being good. Its much, much, much harder to do that in LoL because of how tanks and counter items work. You can try all you want, but if your tank is terrible, it doesn't matte how much damage you can do as Corki, because they're going to get in your face and blow every ability they have and kill you.

League of Legends is a great game, don't get me wrong, but there are a few aspects about it that Dota completely has nailed down better. League of Legends also suffers from less interesting heros because of the developers' hero creating code (They claim that omniknight is a bad hero because his abiltiies, namely repel and Divine Intervention, need to be used in specific orders, and they claim that confuses people). The metagame of LoL also shifts way too often and usually focuses around team composition. Compare that to Dota, where just about every hero was good. Team comp was important, but not nearly to the level it is in LoL. In beta, healer teams were the best and then they got nerfed. Then DPS became insane because Madreds was ridiculous. Then AOE teams got too good, then got nerfed (but are still good). Then tank teams were insane. Then tanky-DPS teams were insane. We're in a pretty good spot right now, but I think, once again, we're shifting towards tank teams being too good.

Like I said, I love LoL, I have several hundred games played and am approaching 50 wins over losses, so I'm no scrub either, but it has some serious issues. I'm liable to switch over to Dota 2 when that comes out.

Yeah I usually don't mind either but when you get into 8 matches in a row and you lose all of them because people are just acting like idiots its annoying, and don't get me wrong, I don't mind losing matches as long as its fun but it just isn't when they act like they do all the time on LoL.
