Crashing with ENB

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:00 am

I'm trying to run http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26291 and I installed it into the Oblivion directory, and it crashes when I'm loading my latest save. Everything is fine in the main menu though, and I can tell an apparent difference of color.

Any help?

Couldn't say really, without knowing more about your setup (ENB details, other mods, hardware, OS, installation folder and so on).

Reason for that is, I've used ENB for Oblivion - and a few other games - without issues (other than slowing FPS to a crawl with certain combinations of particular ENB settings + particular mods...) So, yeah, I assume it's something like inadequate hardware, impoper installation of ENB, extreme overkill of ENB + mods, weirdness with folders and, say, Windows 7 or Vista... or, um, something I haven't thought of right now. :)

Well, I'm on Vista, and I don't have very many mods, and certainly not any heavy mods like overhauls at the moment. I have an 8800 Ultra video card.

Now, I assume that the only file I need to download for ENB is the "ENBseries" under the main files category. I don't need any of the optional files, correct? I simply extracted the ENBseries into my Oblivion folder, and that's where the ENB ini is now.

EDIT: Although, I do have RAEVWD, but it seems to run pretty well on a low-modded setup.

I've never used ENB myself, but isn't there an Oblivion-specific download too? I'm not sure about the whole setup procedure, it seems like a pretty complicated, little-documented thing to me.

Sorry MTB, I know it's been a while, but I've been struggling with a new install (with a bunch of experimentation, not to mention some really daft mistakes so far...) and so on.

How is ENB working out for you now - any better? More to the point perhaps, working at all? I wish I knew something that could help straight away, but I can still try to figure out what might be wrong, and with any luck stumble upon it.

A bit of advice, once you do get it working (or if you have already) - tweaking the settings isn't particularly straightforward. Or at least, not for me. For example, these screenshots are from my new install (again!) with no ESPs or ESMs except Oblivion and Shivering Isles, patched. The only *mod* (excluding ENB, which kinda counts, I guess) is Alternative Start Revamped, so I could quickly and easily start just about anywhere, and check out the scenery. No mesh, texture, LOD, weather, water replacers/enhancers or whatever here either. This is basically a fresh install, plus ENB. But things could be better, as you can see - things are rather dark, and a bit... peculiar in some ways:

So, some tweaking is certainly in order. Well, IMO. I've seen some pretty amazing ENB screenies for TES4, and I even took a few ages ago (which I can't find now, unfortunately). But it might take a while (or not) to get there. And it doesn't do anything about horrible tiling, realistic lighting or the like. Enter mods... :)

edit: Oh my. So, I managed to bork that process too! :D http://img203.imageshack.us/g/98497984.jpg/ are some more likely candidates for Vanilla + ENB, but I'm sure I have a lot to learn. If I do learn anything of use, and it turns out you can run ENB fine (or are already) I'll be happy to pass it on.

Well, I uninstalled ENB, so I haven't tried since.

The download page looks a little confusing. There's the main file, and the optional files. Do I need only the main file, or do I also need the "effects" and "high quality, or "low quality" files?

I went with effects and high quality, in that order. As for what's required, I think it's all there. I do remember looking at another page (the actual ENB site, possibly...?) and I suppose I might've downloaded something in addition to the Nexus stuff. Hm. hang on a sec, and I'll see if I can be sure either way.

edit: Yep, looks like just the Nexus DLs, in the above order.

edit2: Good luck! And also, Godrays (from OBGEv2) is something I'd recommend, on top of ENB. It really seems to work well with it, as I just now discovered. I just created a shaderlist.txt, wrote Godrays.fx in it, and nothing else. Not sure how some of the other OBGE effects would go in combination. Perhaps I'll try that next... selectively and cautiously, I think. :)

Okay, well I'm going to try again.

Okay, I got it all running now. I just needed the "effects" file, which is probably required, not optional...

If you get everything running, and get a decent look for it, do please tell me your settings for the effects file stuff (I believe it is controlled by keyboard keys) over in the OBGE thread. I did do a quick port of the effects file effect, but I've only got default settings, and I either need to port the rest too, or find new settings, because it's a bit extreme ATM. :)

Yeah, I uninstalled it again anyway. It is over-the-top and I don't want to spend my time messing around with the values in the INI.

Better to just wait for more OBGE things.
