A better descriptor for the term "PERK"

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:06 pm

Perk is the best way to describe a perk, or would you want to call a car "four wheeled transport vehicle"?

People don't call cars that? No wonder everyone laughs at me when I talk about my "Four wheeled transport vehicle."

To me Perk just doesn't fit TES. It's more of a Fallout term.

"Perk" sounds best, in my opinion. What's the big deal with the word "perk"? The term wasn't created for Fallout and perks are, well, perks.

All alternatives are equally nebulous in my opinion but i would like a degree of separation from the Fallout system so i'll have to go with trait.

For me it's a tie between "expertise", "ability", and "proficiency". I just chose "proficiency" because I think it makes the most sense, to become proficient in a certain branch of a skill.

Perk I don't really like because it reminds me of benefits of sorts. It almost brings back the feeling of gaining experience points and just choosing what you want to be good at, which is supposed to be the exact opposite of the Elder Scrolls system.

I suppose for me the "perk" system has replaced the Attributes system and "perk" just sounds a little too casual, impersonal, for something we have worked hard to make our character achieve. "My Sword perk level is pretty high", now that sounds a little weird to me.

Nooooo!! Is that true?

I won't be able to make any Restore Fatigue potions anymore.

Can we get an "I don't care because it's the same thing no matter what it's called" option please?

I voted to keep it.

perk

additional benefit: a benefit given to an employee in addition to a salary, e.g. the use of a car or membership in a club
"one of the perks of the job"

But "talent" would be a close second. Also like the term "swag", although that's more of a referance to physical objects, not advantages.

Hmmmmm...I'm really torn between 'krep' and 'kerp'.

Seriously, what does it really matter what they're called. The word perk seems to define them pretty well.

I went with "Perk". Mostly to be a [censored]. But also because IT'S A WORD. It's not going to make or break the game. You paranoid people, constantly fearing that Skyrim will turn into "Fallout with magic". Because of a word?? That's even less legit of a fear than the usual stuff.
Mumbles: always so afraid of change...

I'm at a loss of words because of this ridiculous behavior, so I'll just leave it at that.

PS: I realize most people voted for "perk", but I'm just so sick of the very lot of you ridiculous people that I needed to rant for a bit. Seriously, the people at this forum have started driving me insane. I'll be back around October.

PPS: Come to think of it, why not change the name of "Level" too? I mean, it was in Fallout too, after all. BAHAHAHAHAH!!! (insane, joyless laughter)

So afraid that people want to change the word. The more distance they can put between the TES and Fallout, the better in my opinion. Besides, it's just a word, no need to pop a vessel over this, right?

I'd say making a thread about a word is popping a vessel over this.

If you want them to put as much distance between TES and fallout, then one of them is going to have to get rid of an open world, levels, etc. etc. etc. etc.

What are you, a Logic Troll? Pick a side and start mudslinging, this is srs bizness!

But seriously- yeah, uhokerrably absurd isn't it? Reminds me of real-world politics..."They want to crucify us, we've got to use a different word for what we're going to do anyway!"

Although, given what they're using them as a cheap replacement for- how about "skill?"
