Replay ability and Unique Races

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:33 am

I've had an idea now for a while but would like to see everyone else's opinion on adding a different replay element.

How about after completing a certain quest or part of the main quest you would unlock a unique race. Oblivion had traces of aylied (sp?) Ruins so what if completing a quest allowed you to choose them for future play throughs. The falmer used to live in these parts and could hopefully be a unique race?

Thoughts??

Interesting concept but I think it should be left for the modders to do, it kinda breaks lore. And for a modder to implement a new race wouldn't take a long time, maybe a month tops.

Falmer aren't really the "let's mingle with the people who slaughtered us" types, unfortunately. ;P

It's an interesting idea, but I don't see it happening, unfortunately.

It would feel to me like a video game instead of a role-playing game. Future play-through ought not to be anywhere near my mind while I'm adventuring in Skyrim.

I get what you're saying, but don't think it will be put in. Besides, that kind of takes away from the RPG sense and makes it feel more like an arcade style.....

I don't know... while having different races certainly increases replayability, why would these extra races need to be locked from the start? I don't think it would change the replay value if you just had access to all races, even special races, at the beginning of the game. Unless these special races are overpowered, in which case, I wouldn't be too interested.

All this, of course, is predicated on the idea that the races are going to be sufficiently differentiated (not just by looks). I'll be happy enough with the traditional races if they are unique enough, and I imagine they will provide me with plenty of replay value.

Yeah, leave the lore-ambiguous custom races to modders, and instead concentrate on making the vanilla races different from each other.

I personally don't really like having one play through directly affect another. Each character I play should be separate. That's one of the things I don't like about Dragon Age, how there's unmarked quests to "unlock" class specializations, but you can't typically use those classes with the character that learned them. So that character doesn't really learn anything, but inexplicably the next character you play has full access to them without having to go through the quests to learn them. I don't like that concept in an RPG.
