What new feature are you most excited about?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:28 am

So now that we've all had some time to process everything we learned from all the information about Skyrim that's come out recently, I'm left wondering, which is the coolest new feature? We certainly learned about a lot of changes to the ES formula and I think I approve of basically all of them. I pose the question to you forum members, which new feature do you like the sound of the most? If you can please go into a bit of depth to explain why!

I think the thing that I'm the most interested in is the new Perks system, especially considering that during the course of a playthrough we'll only be able to select a maximum of 50 perks from the list of around 280 (according to Todd). This is awesome because it means that every character really is going to be different, not like Oblivion where once you reach end-game basically every character from every race winds up being pretty much the same (100 in all skills and attributes). It also leaves me with some questions, like will there be race specific perks? Or faction specific perks? Who knows but it's an idea that has a lot of potential :)

Let's hear from you guys and show Bethesda what we're looking forwards to in their new game!

I like the new skill system, it gives your a bit of flexibility within each skill categori, while the perks allow you to give your character a distinct feel.

Also the dual wielding is nice, mostly for it′s ability to give us a bit more creative freedom with combat (as well as adding a touch to roleplaying....now your character can be left or right handed)

Oh and the new magic as a weapon style too, I found it almost silly easy if you decided to mix swords and shield with magic in Oblivion, both at range and in melee.

Probably the Radiant Story

At least potentially. It could also turn into the biggest let down.

I like the new features of Perks and Dual Wielding. It will be great to finally be able to dual wield. Also, Perks supply a more in depth look at your character and allow each one of your characters to be "unique" in someway. (unless you choose everything the exact same for each person.)

it was mentioned in the podcast with Todd, here is a quote of the part

16:12 Within the one-handed skill tree you've got these different perks for maces, and axes, and swords and so on. Within the magic system is it kind of similar, is it by school that you're perking up, or is it individually like I've got fire spells, and I'm going to perk fire spells?

"Well there's the school Destruction, so that covers like a category of spells, and then within Destruction there are perks for fire based spells. So people see we've removed Mysticism, but that's just a label right? Those spells go into other skills. And then it gets deeper within those skills. The easy thing for us is to just add more skills. That's actually easier. Because in the old games there was just a skill and a number, there wasn't really a progression. We really want you to feel that you're getting better in this particular skill. And perks are the main way we do that now. And I think the game right now has like 280 perks if you include the ranks. So even a character that raises all their skills to 100, and they're playing and they're level 50, they've only gotten to pick 50 perks. They're very different characters. And a lot of the power is in the perks as opposed to the raw number of the skill. There's still some power in the raw number of the skill, just not as much as there used to be. All that stuff has been moved into the perks."

  • The additional crafting mentioned in the GI podcast with Todd Howard.
  • Body and face customization with scars and decals.
  • How amazing the forests look, I can't wait to get away from the main quest and just run around.
  • I'm very exited that there will be so many perks, it will be fun carefully picking out the ones I want most.
  • Bloom/HDR looks alot better and less radioactive as opposed to Oblivion.
  • Finishers! I can't wait to tear [censored] up!
  • Fire spells stay on the ground burning for a while after being cast and you can use your hand as a freakin' flamethrower!
  • The female NPCs seem to look alot better, hey what can I say I'm a man and I'm a svcker for eye candy.

There are so many I'm excited about. The new level system, new perks system and so on. I think I will have to go with the new combat system with being able to choose which hand you want each weapon/spell in.

That does not say ONLY 50 Perks, that says at level 50 even if all your skills are 100 you will only have 50 perks, as to say your level in a skill doesn't effect how many perks you may have, only your level does... 'So even a character that raises all their skills to 100, and they're playing level 2 they've only got 2 perks' there, does that mean there's a max 2 perks now? No. In no way does that explicitly say maximum 50 perks... & I listened to that podcast so I know what he said... Skills do not effect the amount of perks you have, your level effects how many perks you have...

tho it still means by the end of the game a player can only select 50 perks of the around 280 in the game, so the point still remains that a player can only at best invest into about 1/3 of all the perks, now how many perks each skill has is unknown, so how many skills we can "max out" perk wise is unknown.

It′s obvious tho the theme is your not going to be able to grind yourself into some all mighty God with all skill groups maxed with perks.

He actually never said level 50 was the max, level he did say however that after level 50 leveling would be slower, but there isn't some level 50 level cap....

Yeah this is basically how I feel, with Oblivion you can min/max and create a "perfect" character if you want to, and I'm the sort of person who would do it (I actually did it twice lol). It made Oblivion feel kind of spreadsheety but damned if I'm not going to create the best character possible! Anyways I think it'll make watching Skyrim LPs really interesting too because you'll get to see tons of different kinds of characters with lots of diversity :) My only concern is that there not be an obviously-best series of perks to take if you want to become an overpowered god character.

I also just remembered that I'm really looking forwards to the new features in the character creation too... there's probably gonna go my first 2 hours of Skyrim :whistling:

true, but they have made it clear they plan to make player unable to max out all perks, so we at least know that max level will be less then total amount of perks in the game.

Combat sounds fun and I can't wait to get a better look at all the races. I hope this new creation system dosn't limit you'r ability to create unique faces though.

Fingers crossed for fun non combat moments though.

And i'm looking forward to all the new books that will be in the game. I hope they bring back all of the ones from Morrowind and Oblivion along with a ton of new ones. I want to create my own library.
