Hunger, thirst, and sleep, oh my.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:05 am

Which hunger and/or thirst and/or sleep mod(s) do you use, and why?

I would particularly like one that plays nicely with SM Encumbrance & Fatigue (in Fallout 3 emulation mode) and FCOM. Oh, and RBP. And a few other things besides. One mod for all three, that fits the bill, would be fantastic.

I've been trying out Vim & Vigor Advanced, but it really doesn't play well with some of my other mods at the moment, to the extent that my new character had well over a thousand fatigue before level 1, and the Timescale just wouldn't stay set at 6, which is about as high as I can tolerate (I was using 5, which I would prefer, due to another mod's preferences, though 6 was close enough). It kept jumping up to 30, no matter what I set it at. Ugh.

So anyway, that probably gives a fair indication of what I would like, and what I don't like/want. Any help would be very much appreciated.

edit: Something rather basic would be preferred, like FWE for Fallout 3, say. Or thereabouts.

Check out TheNiceOne's mods. I can recommend them all, and they may just fit the bill.

Kuertee's Eat & Sleep is also quite nice.

For a different approach try Tejon's mods, especially TFE (Tejon's Fatigue Effects) plus Roughing It.

I've actually been using a mod by the same name as the topic for at least a couple of years now:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2436

Not sure if that one is considered "outdated" or what, as I never hear mention of it when these threads come up, but I will go on record as saying that I have never has any issues with it permanently altering any stats or causing any other problems that I know of.

It's pretty straightforward in that it gives you a little unobtrusive text at the top of the screen when you are hungry, thirsty or tired, and you will get mild attribute penalties (they will show in red on your char sheet) and you can eat normal oblivion food just by clicking on it in your inventory to sate your hunger. Depending on the type of food, it will have different 'caloric' values (i.e. mutton will hold you over alot longer than an apple - which sometimes wont even sate your hunger).

For thirst, you pretty much have to use either a well (modified by this mod) or a waterskin (added by this mod) which can be filled at the wells.

For sleep you can sleep in a bed or bedroll and depending on where you sleep, you'll get a different amount of 'rest'.

It may not work with any mods that alter the vanilla beds or wells. Also, it works via a script on the PC, so it probably wont work with mods that add another script to the PC.

Don't forget about Simple Essentials (Skycaptain). It is still in beta, but works well and the captain intends finalizing it after DR6 comes out. It also has a companion mod that goes with--Shad's Water Bucket Plus, which provides waterskins and more beverage options. At the moment, SE is not on Nexus ... you'll have to search the threads for a link I put up at Skycaptain's request. But it is as simple and basic as it gets, while still offering the immersion of eating/sleeping/drinking, all rolled into one plugin.

TheNiceOnes Real Sleep Extended

I've been using this one and SM Encumbrance together without any issues at all. It also includes a variable time scale option which is quite nice to have. So you can make time pass faster when you're out in the wilderness than when you're in some shop in the city, among other things. There was a new release lately that has some neat additions to this part of the mod, like a variable time scale for fast travel and an immersive wait function.

Thanks all, I am testing those one by one (or, in some cases, combinations of them).*

Hadn't even heard of a couple there. Of course, the more, the merrier! Suggestions always welcome, and I'm sure there are others who might benefit along the way as well.

* On top of, I might add, a (finally, this time around!) totally stable "FCOM++ deluxe" BAIN install, customised somewhat for a couple of chatacter types I have in mind.

The thread about Simple Essentials is http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1069984-simple-essentials-question/page__st__40__p__15947340__hl__Simple%20Essentials__fromsearch__1&#entry15947340

I've been a fan since it was released as a beta. Does everything you want in one mod, there's no readme, but there are full instructions in the thread, and a direct download.

A much loved mod for those who know about it.

I use real sleep extended and real thirst. I like them both because they're dynamic. I don't use any hunger mod though.

Yup, V&VA is long overdue for the promised update. I'm sorry about that.

I have a working version of the updated V&VA on my hard drive, but it still needs quite a bit of play testing, and a whole lot of polishing up. All in all, though, the base of the update is complete.
Reality threw me a high and inside curve ball a year or two ago, and I've still not got my feet planted firmly again.
I keep my eye on the http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=839286, and the comments on the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15773.
If you want, you can post your issues in the thread here, I'll do my best to help you out. (Plus, any posts will keep the thread from falling off the forum, since it has died pretty much.

I do seriously intend on releasing an update for V&VA, but my motivation and focus are really low at the moment.

Thank you for replying, Ssenkrad! :) I'll give it another run if you like, once I decide between a few more other options (it never ends...) - all I remember clearly now is the forementioned Timescale and Fatigue issues. While I'm talking Fatigue, by the gods I would I lvoe to see it renamed. Having more Fatigue is good, they say?! But anyway... ;)

I would love to see an new and improved version, particularly if it plays well with... er, a whole bunch of other mods. I know, I know. That's probably asking for trouble, and asknig a lot of any given modder (f'rex, your good self). But I'm a chronic experimenter with, and user of mods, so compatibility is always something I look for (and hope for). Pretty sure there's a number of people out there who would also be keen.

Thanks again for popping in and keeping me and anyone else reading this thread updated on V&VA. :foodndrink:

I use TFE. :spotted owl:

Since you're already running an encumbrance and fatigue mod, I should mention that if you do get around to trying it, you can turn off everything except the hunger/fatigue component in TFE.ini.
