BetterMusicSystem: Started...*crickets*

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:36 pm

I have been using Side777's Better Music System (BMS) for awhile now, and have never once encountered any sort of problem....until now. It really is not a huge big deal, nothing game breaking or anything, but it is a little annoying. I have spent the past while searching for the possible cause and I have come to no conclusion thus far.
I have all the required files installed: OBSE, Enhanced Music Control, and sound commands. I have filled nearly every music folder with music, but when I start playing Oblivion, (launched via OBSE) all I get is nothing but silence. I check the console to see if it is running and it says:
BetterMusicSystem: started

usually it says that then says the track it plays, but it doesn't say anything, just that.
I check the .ini for possible settings that may have been (oddly) adjusted without me knowing, but there is none - to my knowledge. I thought maybe I made some sort of adjustment that BMS didn't like, so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but I had no luck.

The only possible cause (which I am about to test as soon as I am done typing this) is LO. I suppose by uninstalling it and reinstalling it, it got messed up in the load order...but I would not see that as such a factor that would cause it not to work.

EDIT:
as predicted, running BOSS did not change anything....but it was rather entertaining seeing the game glitch and play the title music while I ran around a fort ruin.

Hmm..... I was having problems with this mod for a while as well. Can't seem to remember exactly what fixed it (I'm not too sure I even knew.) I do know however, that switching the .esp with the older 2.1 version fixed problems for some people.

Also, have you tried a clean-save?

Try the BMS thread on these forums as well, I believe I posted the fix there. Can't seem to procure the link at the moment.

The current version has only an esm file, no problem there.

I've had problems with that mod too (which i'm led to belive are caused by Enhanced Music Control). After playing with it for a while the mod sometimes doesn't start, and when it does it fades the music to 0 for no reason. However i've found that disabling the esm file, loading and saving the game without it, and then enabling it again up fixes this problem. For a while, atleast.

okay good. I noticed it had a very odd after effect after I disabled it. For the first 30 minutes of gameplay music...I can't even explain the bugginess of the music after disabling. First, the title music played all the way through, and afterwards, there was no music until I entered a battle. And after the battle the music would continue playing until there was just silence. Like the game didn't want to use the "explore" or "dungeon" folder. Ofcourse, after 30 minutes, it started working like the vanilla music system again
God...I swear...does anyone know why Oblivion does anything like it does? I feel like, if Oblivion was a physical object, like the engine of it was, and you opened it up, there would just be a "WTF" placement of gears, cogs, belts, motors, pullys, and electronic boards, switches, resistors and all sorts of stuff placed at random with no real rhyme or reason for it being there. While looking at it, you would think this hunk of randomness shouldn't work at all, but for some odd reason it works....

anyways, I will go see what happens when I activate BMS now

I always get the menu music ingame until cell change if i quite to main menu and load a save from there

Oblivion is sometimes indeed a whimsical beast, but taming it is half the fun :D Still there are worse, for example the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R., if memory serves, had to be handled with silk gloves to prevent it from having a fit. And fits it had :brokencomputer:

Interesting, if only I had discovered this sooner (don't know how to use advanced search on the new forum yet ...)

The same has happened to me and I never thought it could bork the audio system like that! Even after uninstalled, it only worked after some time... and I also tried a bit of everything, from thinking there was a problem with some codec to making changes to the Oblivion.ini.

There's a lot of unpredictability going on with BMS. It's funny how only a few suffer from the strange malfunction.

Let's see if I can find the thread.
