So.... why are we fighting?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:52 am

Well, there's this dragon that wants to eat the entire world...that's rather inconvenient.

My reason? The Eragon movie. All dragons must be (Dalek Voice) Exterminated least they bring up the terrible terrible memories of that movie.

Don't you mean Star Wars: A New Hope only worse?

"hmm so what are we doing today"?

"Same thing we do everyday, save the world"

pinky and the dragonborn, pinky and the dragonborn..........

Does this mean I'm getting old if I totally get this :sadvaultboy: Made me laugh though.

I think the main quest will center around a political struggle involving the civil war in Skyrim. It seems the Dragons are being thrown in for good measure, this being a fantasy and all.

If the game is as big as morrowind, the LAST thing I'll be doing is the main quest.

If I remember correctly... we never really have a purpose for doing what we do. We're told to do this/that by some old guy and we just do it. No rescuing a damsel in distress. No vengance mission for your murdered girlfriend. No slaughtered family type of deal.

Will we see anything like that in this one? Or are we doing or deed just for the hell of it?

It is a TES tradition to let you think up a reason of your own to do the things you do and not suggest anything. If you can't think up a reason then, well, try playing the game without doing the main quest (I know some people did that in Morrowind).

Lol, plus, this isn't the "real world" like in fallout, there is no post apocolyptic dragon ravaged world after the attack. If Alduin wins then Nirn is gone, no rad roaches will be left and the era of mortal beings is over. We fight because we don't have the option of survival otherwise.

I kinda like the magic of TES where you just wake up in a cell, as if it's the first day of your life. No connections and no known past. Your character literally doesn't exist before the game begins. But I also wouldn't mind if there's a very odd personal reference in the game. For example, while you're randomly wandering the wilderness a man keeps on appearing claiming to know about your past and who you are, sorta like G-Man from the Half Life series.

Most of these replies seem to be along the lines of: "because I'm a bad-ass hero" (which doesn't give me much hope for role-playing). I want to know why my cynical cowardly thief character would fight. "I'm the Dragonborn? Yeah right! I don't believe that mumbo-jumbo. I'm going down the tavern to find a lusty Argonian maid. Let some other idiot fight the dragons!" What would his motivation be? Dragons sitting on big piles of gold, Smaug stylee, might help. "I may be a craven little coward, but I'm a greedy craven little coward!"

Hey, I'm playing an elf. Alduin can eat the world all he wants. I'll just occupy myself with guild quests.

If you dont banish Alduin, you and a whole world will be doomed.
You are fighting for survival,a good reason to fight isnt it?

That's the joy of an Elder Scrolls game, it's not clearly defined and gives you the choice to make your own path. Don't want to follow your destiny as Dragonborn? Then don't. You could avoid becoming the Nerevarine in Morrowind and the Champion of Cyrodiil in Oblivion if you wanted. If you do choose to go down that path though it's up to you for your motivations.

Depending if my favourite perk from Fallout comes in. I will fight for the delicious, tasty, sweet human meat:shifty:. Why be a Vampire,or Werewolf when I can be the guy who mothers tell theirchildren bedtime storys of the evil man who craves human flesh, but isin't a vampire.

Oh and I kill dragons who think they can eat my flock.

Quite fitting for my first post actually, Hello everyone. I've been meaning to sign up for years now actually.

Erm, so if I'm reading you right, there's no point in doing something unless it is caused by something directly affecting the character or your self? No altruistic intent? No for the better good? No for the 7th generation?

Or, why not just rack it up to the pursuit of greed and glory? That might appeal to the more self-centered character?
