Clearing Up Misconceptions about Steam

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:21 am

As I understand it, once you activate the game on Steam, it will still check for available patches and download them.

You can disable that feature, and again patches are not exclusive to Steam.

I concur. Dead horse seems to be possessed by a demon and we need another thread for exorcism.

It is possible to turn off automatic updates for whichever games you choose.

We only got the convicts 'cause you guys wouldn't take them any more. And you got loads more religious/general hokerrs :P.

And there's still a slight chance that the side of politics who aren't currently in power will somehow get their way and take us down the route of patching up our current, ageing infrastructure and relying heavily on wireless stuff. Because that'd be cheaper, its what the USA has decided to do, and using/needing hundreds of megs of bandwidth is inconceivable . If that happens, you get to point and laugh at our crushed dreams :P.

rest assured, I'll laugh maniacally for about 2 minutes, then I'll feel terrible for you since I know how bad it svcks without high speed.

@Oni: ROFL. Yeah, I've had to deal with dial-up since I first got onto the internet, and man does it svck. The hours of watching a progress bar svcks(I'm watching one right now actually). When I die, I'll beg the afterlife deity to skip over any portion of my life involving dial-up.

A lot of people are talking about this, and it's an important issue. It's worth more discussion, even though theres been a lot of topics on it already.

For a long time the only access I had was 56k dialup at my fathers place (and I lived with my mother). Then I moved out, and a year or two later ADSL was installed on that exchange . But I moved to Melbourne, and now a' days I'm on ADSL2+ with unlimited downloads :twirl:.

I feel for you, bro. Diaup would svck even worse these days, due to the increase in the assumed bandwidth.

It'll probably all be presented via some cosmic monitor, a look back at your life, but the celestial ISPs will be on a heavenly form of dial-up or something. I don't reckon the gods have broadband. lol I'll skip it too.

Ya. There was a poll in the New Vegas forum just after release. For Steam being required. The overwhelming result was "No". It got into the hundreds of votes. Dunno if it's been deleted. I'll check my post history, I posted in it. lol

Edit: I think http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122499-why-steam/ is it. I ended up just searching New vegas Steam, my post history is all over the place. There were too many Steam topics at the time. Results are pretty even I guess, I seem to remember a poll with a clearer margin, but whatever. Even results... reinforces my opinion that Steam should be optional. lol :D

The problem is, not enough of those people who voted "No" are willing to actually vote with their wallet on the matter, so http://gamebane.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/boycotters-playing-modern-warfare-2.jpg

You saying "No" is only worth something if you stick with it.

Yeah, you're right. But it was more geared toward gauging whether people want it or not. Not would they disregard a game that ships with it, it had been announced long before that Vegas was using Steam, then came the topics in uproar and the battle commenced in those threads, for Steam, against Steam, on it goes. But once announced it all leaned more toward do people actually want it? I guess. lol
