-Clearing up Misconceptions About Steam-

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:35 am

The other side of the misconceptions. Addressing the Steam apologists and publishers/developers as well. This thread is not meant to be mocking or trolling in any sense. This is a very serious thread and deals with common issues brought up in discussion, both on these forums and elsewhere.

Misconception #1: "Offline mode works for me. If you say it doesn't for you, you're lying."

Offline mode doesn't work for everyone and most of the time it doesn't stay in offline mode when it does work. Some people may get it to work for them, but if it was so good there wouldn't be so many complaints.

Misconception #2: "Everyone in the entire universe has high speed internet. If they don't, they're too poor to play games or need to give up or move."

A large percentage of people (which I cannot currently acquire the actual percentage) do not have high speed internet. These people work and pay hard cash (or get the money from hard working people) for the games they play just like everyone else and have a right to speak their concerns and opinions.

I myself only have the option of cable (which is $70 a month, just for the internet alone) or dial-up.

Misconception #3: "People that are against Steam don't make any sense. Steam has only benefits and no cons."

This one should answer itself. If there were nothing but benefits, there would be no discussion about this and everyone would be honky dory with everything.

Misconception #4: "People that like physical copies are behind the times and need to get with the future!"

This one is just absurd, but actually does come up in discussion. It is kind of broad, as in it deals with more than just Steam, but Steam users tend to say it more often.

...................

Feel free to add more misconceptions you encounter.

Again, this is not meant to cause flame wars, or trolling, or anything else. I just wish to represent the other side equally. Keep it civil.

Yeah, this thread has been a bit overdone today.

The first thread is closed, and I was told not to make another thread until the old Steam thread was closed.

The second you linked is not specifically tied to Steam.

Considering there's not actually anything new to discuss -most of this has been covered multiple times- do we really need another thread so soon?

No, you don't have to discuss anything if you don't want. I just thought I'd give the other side of the discussion a chance to voice their opinions on the matter.

All I've seen lately is people with positive outlooks towards Steam. I personally don't care if games have Steam functionality, but am totally against Steamworks. Perhaps I should have clarified that in the first post. Oh, well.

You may want to check the previous threads about Steam then. There's been plenty of back and forth from both sides -some of it quite heated.

I read through the majority of it.

Was kind of one sided in my opinion (which is why I made this one).

Anyway, it's still early and perhaps others who did not contribute to that thread will do so here.

I don't know when have you last tried offline mode, but in the last two years it's been working fine for me, I played through entire games in single player in offline mode. Moreover I haven't heard about anybody for whom it didn't work (anecdotal, I know).

If a game uses Steamworks it can (and most of the time will) still have a retail copy, so you can install from the disk, and only need to activate the game on the internet, for which you definitely don't need high speed cable, and don't need to download lots of data.

Steamworks provides benefits that people find fun and/or useful like cloud saves/achievements/autopatching etc, it does have cons but those are minor (I mean having to run a ~80meg client in the background in an age when everyone has gigs of ram is no big deal).

This is going to be closed for the time until moderators and admin decide what to do about Steam topics. The problem is that there is a lot of circular arguing, the most vocal anti- or pro- "Steamites" keep excessively repeating the same thing so we may have to lay down some rules.

We will get back when something is decided
