Sick of registering everywhere!

Long time Oblivion player, just getting back to the game with the new Steam release with all the DLC. Anyways, most of the mods seem to require registration at TESNexus or whatever. I'd like to request that modders would start uploading their mods to more convenient file hosting services too, like Filefront or MediaFire, where players could get them without the hassle of registration. Fileplanet apparently requires a paid for membership (or I didn't see any option for a "free" registration), and TESNexus complains that all my email adresses are already in use, although I'm sure I haven't registered there before(!). I wouldn't like to create a new email adress just to download some mods. And all in all, it'd just save time to be able to download things right away, and with so many mods available, IMO there should really be a faster, more user-friendly way to get them.

Thank you.

Nexus and PlanetElderScrolls are the two best hosting sites. Free registration at Nexus means access to a wonderfully organized site, a one-stop shopping spot, so to speak. Your wish may sound convenient to you but is not, in fact, a better system.

If you have trouble registering at Nexus, that is an issue to bring up with Nexus.

Fileplanet is actually free though its understandable that you thought it was pay only. The register for free button is hidden somewhere inconspicuous in an attempt to get more people to sign up for the pay service.

In any case, both sites let you look up user comments, find other mods by the same creator and all sorts of other stuff. The 5 minutes spent registering are worth it in the long run.

TES Alliance doesn't require registration if I remember correctly. I don't use it as much since the layout is a bit disorienting for me.

Well, this is odd...I sent a password change request and managed to log on to my account fine (using my email), although I was sure I hadn't registered there, at least on that email (maybe some other in the past, but it's unlikely all my emails would be taken). False alarm I guess.

Still, though I repeat myself, I think it'd be nice to have instant download mirrors at least for the newest mods. Just to save time. And it's unlikely many players will use their accounts for anything else than downloading, meaning lots of "lost" accounts when an user becomes inactive and so on. It can be difficult to remember your past usernames and passwords for each site, as I proved here :P

Or people can keep uploading to a well-known (and unlimited bandwidth) site for oblivion mods called TESNexus like they have been.

I think you`re forgetting that many modders likes to get feedback on their mods :whisper: , and the tesnexus are perfect place to do so (you have to register to be able to post a comment) .

TESNexus is a great site, and you don't even need to register to download small mods - it's only for larger mods over 2mb or thereabouts that you need to register (so no need to register to download simple esp mods without added meshes or sounds etc.) - and after all it costs them money to host all these mods for you, even taking advertising revenue into account!!

Hard enough for some of us to keep track of things on one site. Adding more just makes the act of uploading and/or updating take that much longer and a great many of us haven't yet been blessed with super speedy fiber optic lines. (curse you Verizon for not allowing servers!)

Also, TES Alliance does require registration for mod downloads, so it's no different than the others.

One reason not to use outside sites for hosting is that if your mod is unknown and therefore not downloaded a lot, the host will delete your file.

I don't use TES Nexus to host my files anymore and haven't for a long while. The smaller files don't get deleted from Media Fire, but the large 304mb mod that I have has been deleted multiple times from File Front and Slingfile (MediaFire has a size limit so I can't upload it there). It does get annoying to keep reuploading the large mod. I can understand why people wouldn't want to keep on doing that, particularly if they have slow internet.

No thanks. As modder and mod user, TESNexus is all you need.

Accounts are not deleted. Unless you are not keeping it civil, then you may get similar treatment.
This is also one of the advantages of having registration.

There are even people who do not care about modder's work. They don't read the instructions of mods and pester the authors.
How could you support a mod with a link to some obscure server somewhere?

(EDIT) Oh! Right. You don't mod!

Sigh, just because you can't remember your username and password means we should upload all our stuff to sites like Filefront? You could just write them down or keep a text file on your comp you know. Filefront and similar sites are nice for modders to share files among eachother or when you need a limited group of testers.

I really don't see the reason to jump on this guy. Its a more or less legitimate concern, and he is not the only one who loathes registration, remember passwords, logging in, etc. Saying "we prefer TesNexus for various reasons" is enough, no need to get angry.

Personally, I dislike FilePlanet and MegaUpload and their ilk is that I find them even less user friendly. The layout is atrocious and filled with various adds - many of which are disguised as download buttons, so you have to spend time figuring out which the real button is (hint: its that tiny text only one at the very bottom). Having to wait to download and having restrictions of how much you can download is also not conducive to user friendliness. Sites like TesNexus, on the other hand, let you download immediately from a clean, organized page and allow you to look up and discuss mods easily.

I think the question has been answered logically and I am going to close this thread before it turns into an argument about different hosting sites and their policies, which would be the business of each individual site. I would suggest that if you have a problem with some site's policies, that you contact that site's admins.
